{"id":40032,"date":"2026-08-13T20:47:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T20:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/40032\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T20:47:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T20:47:18","slug":"tour-a-romantic-italian-hillside-garden-in-southern-italy-by-peter-amann-and-gundula-anders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/40032\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour a Romantic Italian Hillside Garden in Southern Italy by Peter Amann and Gundula Anders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.veranda.com\/_assets\/design-tokens\/fre\/static\/icons\/clock-regular.4ddebeb.svg\" alt=\"Estimated read time\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>2 min read<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"0\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Southern Italy feels like home to Peter Amann and Gundula Anders, Munich residents who have spent the last decade or so caring for a centuries-old olive grove in the Cilento region. \u201cIt seems strange, but the Mediterranean landscape feels like a bridge to my childhood, surrounded by Latin language and Roman influences,\u201d Amann says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">He, a botanical researcher\u2013turned\u2013cultural tour operator and travel-guide author, and Anders, a vocal instructor, share a love of gardening. \u201cBut not the typical Italian style,\u201d Anders says. \u201cLocal villagers don\u2019t understand why the garden is brown and dry in the summer and looks like the surrounding landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"Lush garden with various colorful flowers, greenery, and trees under a clear sky.\" title=\"Lush garden with various colorful flowers, greenery, and trees under a clear sky.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2668\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2dccabc9-db2e-45c6-b152-98a0b4c919d7.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1ddfba50\"\/>Richard Bloom<\/p>\n<p>The orange garden (set within the orange grove) features Madonna lilies and Mediterranean bulbs like Portuguese squill, tezetta daffodils, and sea squill. Hundreds of irises bloom from November to May.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Amann and Anders, who are only part-time residents, chose not to irrigate to honor the natural beauty of the Mediterranean macchia and garrigue\u2014dense shrubs that thrive here. \u201cI\u2019m trained to see patterns, to understand the landscape ecology, how plants grow together. We think the mellower neutrals during summer\u2019s drought are just as beautiful as when things are flowering,\u201d Amann says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">They rebuilt old stone wall terraces, trimmed back orange and olive trees, and restored the rustic stone farmhouse \u201cso that it looks exactly as we found it,\u201d he says. They did add Euphorbia dendroides, however, which grows higher on the surrounding rocky slopes. \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful and corresponds with the surroundings,\u201d Amann adds. \u201cBeauty has to do with order and things that make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"Rural stone house surrounded by vibrant flowers and greenery under a cloudy sky.\" title=\"Rural stone house surrounded by vibrant flowers and greenery under a cloudy sky.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3300\" height=\"3300\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dc487b02-3450-4b39-9308-bfac7658db21.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1ddfba50\"\/>Richard Bloom<\/p>\n<p>The restored stone house opens to the landscape.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">And much of the beauty here, he notes, comes from the borrowed landscape. \u201cThe garden itself is only about an acre, but what we see is huge\u2014mountains, woodlands, the Gulf of Salerno, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast.
