{"id":40204,"date":"2026-08-14T16:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T16:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/40204\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T16:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T16:46:08","slug":"italian-police-recover-stolen-renoir-cezanne-and-matisse-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/40204\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian police recover stolen Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paintings by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse worth over $10.4 million which were stolen from an Italian museum in March have been recovered, police said Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The paintings were taken by thieves from the villa of the Magnani-Rocca Foundation, near Parma in northern Italy, in a heist that lasted under three minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Parma chief of police Andrea Pagliaro told AFP the investigation centred around a gang of nine Moldavian suspects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Five are accused of carrying out the theft, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Video footage released by police showed two thieves wearing headlamps and with their faces covered entering the villa by breaking through a window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They headed straight into a room where the three paintings hung and took them off the wall, before heading back to the window and passing them through to an accomplice waiting outside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They made off with &#8220;Fish&#8221; by Auguste Renoir, &#8220;Still Life with Cherries&#8221; by Paul Cezanne, and &#8220;Odalisque on the Terrace&#8221; by Henri Matisse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Renoir is worth three million euros ($3.5 million), the Cezanne six million euros and the Matisse some 20,000 euros, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The paintings were recovered at the house of one of the suspects, police chief Pagliaro told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Magnani-Rocca Foundation &#8212; 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Parma &#8212; houses the collection of art historian Luigi Magnani, which also includes works by Durer, Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya and Monet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The theft is the latest in a series of robberies targeting European museums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Last October, thieves broke into the Louvre in Paris in broad daylight, escaping in less than eight minutes with jewellery worth $102 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">ide\/tw<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Paintings by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse worth over $10.4 million which were stolen from an Italian museum in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":40205,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[852,5,69,854,304,553,853],"class_list":["post-40204","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-italy","tag-cezanne","tag-italy","tag-magnani-rocca-foundation","tag-matisse","tag-northern-italy","tag-parma","tag-renoir"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40204","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=40204"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/40204\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/40205"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=40204"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=40204"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=40204"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
