The lights have come back on behind a doorway just off
\nMilan\u2019s Duomo, one modeled on the entrance of an aristocratic
\npalazzo, and with them a name that had been resting in the city\u2019s
\narchives since the age of carriages. Satinine Milano
\n1883 has reopened after decades of silence, carrying a
\npast that is entirely true and beautifully documented, the kind
\nevery young maison dreams of borrowing. Crossing its threshold
\nfeels like opening a letter sealed more than a century ago and
\nfinding the ink still fresh.<\/p>\n

Lorenzo Usellini opened his perfume
\natelier in 1883, in a Milan enchanted by the Belle \u00c9poque, and by
\n1910 he had raised a palazzo on Via Broggi where laboratory and
\nfamily lived under the same roof, the way painters once lived above
\ntheir studios. Working beside his son Carlo
\nAntonio, a chemist of rare talent, he composed the
\nfragrances that carried the name far beyond Italy in the early
\nThirties, the sultry Orchidea Nera and
\nthe aristocratic Caccia alla Volpe,
\npoured into flacons by the celebrated Vetrerie Bormioli.<\/p>\n

Cinema entered the ledger in 1958, when Sophia
\nLoren, freshly celebrated at Venice for The Black
\nOrchid, lent her face to the perfume sharing the film\u2019s title.
\nThe resurrection belongs to Andrea Galletti, a
\nMilanese entrepreneur who traced the house through decades of paper
\nand glass before co-founding Profumieri Milano
\nwith Ridgely Cinquegrana, former president of
\nLoewe. Together they inherited an archive of some 150 surviving
\nobjects, now displayed like relics behind glass, and a laboratory
\nin the Dergano district where every formula is composed in-house.
\nThe boutique itself, christened Officina, was conceived by interior
\ndesigner Mara Bragagnolo as a passage through
\nMilanese memory, in Lombard terracotta, oak paneling and cathedral
\nglass, while Martina Frattura shaped a light so
\nsoft it deserves its own adjective, satin.<\/p>\n

Italo Calvino once imagined a dandy
\nchasing a vanished perfume from salon to salon, and the reborn
\ncatalogue reads like a sequel he would have savored.
\nCaccia alla Volpe still rides through
\nleather and spice with patrician composure, though its formula,
\nonce rich in animal essences, has been rewritten through green
\nchemistry, leaving the fox to survive purely as legend.
\nBugia Bianca translates a white lie into
\nfragrance, all salt on summer skin and a romance both parties will
\npolitely deny. Caff\u00e8 Corretto distills
\nthe very Italian art of correcting espresso with a drop of spirit,
\nturning morning ritual into gourmand mischief. And Amor
\nFati bottles the Stoic invitation to love one\u2019s fate,
\ngratitude rendered fruity and spiced, a philosophy Marcus Aurelius
