Indulging in this delicious dessert is a hassle-free highlight of the travel experience. What should’ve been an effortless Nutella gelato treat resulted in a calorie-packed, sugar-ridden wrong order for this woman.

“Not gonna lie, I’m a little upset right now,” TikTok creator Liz (@lizkggg) begins her video. Then, she jumps into her story to over 723,000 viewers.

What Was Wrong with Her Nutella Gelato?

“I just went to a gelateria in Rome close to our apartment,” she says. “We’re there, and there’s Nutella-flavored ice cream that says ‘Nutella.’”

Enticed, she ordered the “gelato” in a cone. While waiting for her gelato, she observed the employee scooping the contents from a different bin in the same section. Originally, she found it odd but, but attributed it to being a newer batch. When the content creator purchased and received her “gelato,” she took a bite, noticing it tasted eerily similar to the beloved hazelnut spread.

After Liz downed most of the treat, it dawned on her.

“‘I think this is just straight Nutella,’” she recalls mentioning in front of the workers. “‘I don’t think this is ice cream.’”

Sure enough, she was correct.

“The dude comes out running behind us like, ‘Wait. We gave you the wrong thing. That’s just Nutella,’” she recalls the male worker saying. Once the content creator secured the original gelato she wanted, she polished it off, “doubling” her calorie intake.

“I accidentally consumed 20,000 calories of Nutella!” Liz exclaimed. “I just feel so sick.”

    ‘When In Rome’

In Liz’s comments section, some were genuinely perplexed as to how this would happen.

“How do you not notice on the first bite?” one viewer asked.

“I’m more concerned that you couldn’t tell by the texture straight away,” another remarked.

Although some couldn’t wrap their minds around it, others claimed they’ve also fallen victim to the Nutella gelato confusion.

“Wait this genuinely happened to me too except i noticed on the first bite. Im crineee,” one commenter shared.

“So this is why I was genuinely fat after I went to Italy because I would always get Nutella gelato,” a second stated.

“Omg this just happened to me!” a third revealed.

Further down in the comments section, Liz explained that there were two separate gelato containers: One that read “Nutella” and the other “Gnutella.”

However, an alleged former gelateria employee proposed an explanation: “The g was probably to indicate the gelato one and the nutella they gave you was as a topping lol. [Where] i used to work, we didn’t have this but honestly it sounds kinda confusing. I feel sorry for you that this [happened], but vacation cal are the best ones even if extra HAHAHA.”

What Happens If You Consume Too Much Sugar At Once?

In the mid-2010s, there was a Nutella craze where it exploded in popularity. In fact, the first Nutella cafe opened its doors in Chicago in 2017. While those with a sweet tooth for this hazelnut spread may enjoy satisfying their sweet tooth, it contains lots of sugar.

One 7.7 oz Nutella jar has 200 calories per 2 tablespoons (10 servings), totaling 1,000 calories per jar. That’s just the calories. The sugar content is 21 grams, followed by 19 grams of added sugar, for a whopping 40 grams. Now, include that in a gelato, where the base is milk and sugar.

Of course, those familiar with consuming too much sugar at once may know the initial burst of energy that plunges into the exhaustion that follows the crash. This immediate spike causes blood sugar to rise, and the body responds by releasing insulin, which sometimes overshoots, leading to the sugar crash, according to Single Care.

Sometimes, this creates stomach issues, such as nausea and sickness. To alleviate this, Nourish advises drinking plenty of water, eating protein- and fiber-rich foods, or doing light exercises to stabilize your blood sugar.

      @lizkggg

tummy hurts

♬ original sound – liz g

The Mary Sue reached out to Liz via email and TikTok comment.

Have a tip we should know? [email protected]

Italy is known for many cultural cuisines: Pasta, wine, and, of course, its sweet served creamy gelato.
