{"id":43494,"date":"2026-08-30T16:44:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T16:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/43494\/"},"modified":"2026-08-30T16:44:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T16:44:17","slug":"successful-launch-of-the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/43494\/","title":{"rendered":"Successful Launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this morning, the NASA Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) was successfully launched into space using a SpaceX Falcon heavy rocket from KSC Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Stationed around the Sun-Earth L2 point, RST will investigate dark energy and dark matter, conduct a statistical census of planetary systems, directly image exoplanets and enable a broad range of additional astrophysics research.<\/p>\n<p>The Trajectory<\/p>\n<p>Here is the planned trajectory of the Roman Space Telescope (RST) over the next 7 months, as RST travels to the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point 1.5 million km away and enters a 6-month Halo orbit around L2. It will help image exoplanets by blocking out the light from its stars, not with mechanical disks, but a system of masks, prisms, detectors and deformable mirrors.<\/p>\n<p>This technology-demonstrator will showcase the first use of Adaptive Optics and \u201cactive wavefront control\u201d in space, paving the way for future missions such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a schematic of the complex RST Coronagraph and a diagram of its optical subsystem<a href=\"https:\/\/roman.ipac.caltech.edu\/docs\/Roman-CGI-Reference-Info-January2025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">.<\/a> DM1 and DM2 are the two deformable mirrors, with 48\u00d748 actuators each.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"587\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image_0312f4.png\" alt=\"Coronagraph architecture diagram\" class=\"wp-image-800091458\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7437329374820187;width:656px;height:auto\"  \/><a href=\"https:\/\/roman.ipac.caltech.edu\/docs\/Roman-CGI-Reference-Info-January2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">https:\/\/roman.ipac.caltech.edu\/docs\/Roman-CGI-Reference-Info-January2025.pdf<\/a>NASA\/JPL<\/p>\n<p>Wide Field Instrument <\/p>\n<p>The primary instrument on the Roman Space Telescope is the Wide Field Instrument (WFI).<\/p>\n<p>It contains a 300-megapixel visible-to-NIR imaging camera and slitless spectrometer. It provides multiband imaging and spectroscopy from the visible to near-infrared (0.48 to 2.30\u00a0\u03bcm) wavelengths.<\/p>\n<p>WFI produces images that match the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope NIR capabilities, but with a field of view 200x larger.<\/p>\n<p>The WFI will be used to study the nature of dark energy and dark matter, search for exoplanets and for General Astrophysics Surveys.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a pic of the detector array and an illustration of its its wide field of view. <a href=\"https:\/\/roman-docs.stsci.edu\/roman-instruments\/the-wide-field-instrument\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">https:\/\/roman-docs.stsci.edu\/roman-instruments\/the-wide-field-instrument<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1024\" width=\"613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image_d1f3a5.png\" alt=\"Pic of RST detector&#10;Illustration of its FOV\" class=\"wp-image-800091456\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5989596558876009;width:559px;height:auto\"  \/>NASA<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Grace Roman<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Grace Roman (May 16, 1925 \u2013 December 25, 2018) was an American astronomer who made important contributions to stellar classification and stellar motions.
