Image credit: NASA.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/roman-space-telescope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Roman Space Telescope<\/a> will help astronomers solve <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/roman-space-telescope\/roman-observatory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">some of the most profound mysteries in astrophysics<\/a>, such as how the Universe has evolved, its ultimate fate, and whether we are alone.<\/p>\n<p>To make Roman\u2019s sensitive measurements possible, the telescope will observe from a vantage point about 1.5 million km away from Earth in the direction opposite the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>At this special place in space, L2, gravitational forces balance to keep objects in steady orbits with very little assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Named after NASA\u2019s first chief astronomer, the \u2018mother of the NASA\/ESA Hubble Space Telescope,\u2019 Roman will have a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble\u2019s, potentially measuring light from a billion galaxies in its lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoman is exactly the kind of success story we want to see across NASA,\u201d said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelivered ahead of schedule and on budget, this mission reflects more than a decade of dedication from the NASA workforce and our industry partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, Roman will give us a new atlas of the Universe, push the boundaries of discovery, and demonstrate what is possible when America\u2019s space program pairs bold ambition with disciplined execution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoman will be a discovery machine that will bring us closer than ever before to answering humanity\u2019s most profound questions about our cosmic history,\u201d said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith its large field of view and fast survey speeds, Roman will usher us into a new era of discovery and make the invisible visible, setting the foundation for humanity\u2019s search for life beyond our Solar System.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ground control team at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/roman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">acquired telemetry<\/a> within seven minutes of liftoff, and the rocket\u2019s core stage separated from the observatory about half an hour into the flight, with the boosters returning safely to the launch site.<\/p>\n<p>Roman\u2019s solar panels and lower instrument sun shade deployed successfully roughly 83 minutes after launch, and the spacecraft handed off from near-Earth tracking networks to NASA\u2019s Deep Space Network \u2014 routed through ground stations in Australia, Spain, and California \u2014 about 70 minutes in.<\/p>\n<p>The primary Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera, is expected to switch on a few weeks into the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Over its three-month commissioning phase, engineers will calibrate and test Roman\u2019s systems, with NASA targeting the telescope\u2019s first public images for early 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Once operational, Roman is expected to generate about 1.4 terabytes of data daily \u2014 the highest rate of any NASA astrophysics mission so far \u2014 with AI tools and citizen scientists helping process the flood of observations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve never been able to view the Universe with eyes like Roman\u2019s before,\u201d said Julie McEnery, Roman\u2019s senior project scientist at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no telling what more we\u2019ll know and have seen by this time next
