\n\tHe may play a Duke in The Gentlemen<\/a>, but Theo James<\/a> isn\u2019t convinced he\u2019ll be acting opposite a Duchess in Season 3.<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked by Deadline whether the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, had been cast in the recently-confirmed third season of the Netflix show<\/a>, he responded with a joke and wry smile, saying \u201cPrince Harry?\u201d before appearing to deny the news.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, casting is in the gift of Gentlemen creator and showrunner Guy Ritchie, but James appeared to pour cold water on a role for Markle.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think that\u2019s unlikely,\u201d he said. \u201cIn reality, we haven\u2019t even started Season 3. I want to concentrate on Season 2 \u2013 the thing that\u2019s coming out right now. Season 3 will start to build, but we\u2019ve still got a lot of building to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe casting saga started when it emerged that Prince Harry and Markle, who have been living in California with their children for the past six years,\u00a0announced<\/a> that they would be returning to the UK for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n

\n\tNews soon spread that Markle was in talks for a role in a high-profile show in Britain, and Deadline\u2019s Editor-in-Chief, Nellie Andreeva, then scooped<\/a> that the show in question was The Gentlemen, which shoots in London and various country estates around England. <\/p>\n

\n\tDeadline\u2019s Dish article noted that no specific role had been identified and talks were mainly hypothetical, coming before official confirmation of Season 3, which followed as the final Edinburgh TV Festival started last week. Rumors have continued to fly and Netflix\u2019s UK scripted boss, Manda Levin, poured petrol on the fire last week when she refused to officially rule it out<\/a>, saying cryptically: \u201cAll bets are off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMarkle\u2019s reps haven\u2019t said anything at this stage, so it\u2019s one to keep watching. Season 2 of The Gentlemen, which is set in the same world as Ritchie\u2019s 2019 Miramax film begins streaming today on Netflix. <\/p>\n

\n\tIt starts a year after Duke-turned-crime boss Eddie (James) and Susie (Kaya Scodelario<\/a>) join forces to work together in Bobby\u2019s (Ray Winstone) criminal empire overseas. As they drive to expand their enterprise into new countries, the decisions Bobby is making seem to be increasingly unsound.<\/p>\n

\n\tItalian plotline<\/p>\n

\n\tA central plotline for the new season sees Eddie and Susie\u2019s drug enterprise moving into the piazzas of Italy, encountering Italy\u2019s aristocratic \u201cold money\u201d and the Italian mafia. James\u2019 character falls for Benedetta Porcaroli<\/a>\u2018s Bella. However, he wasn\u2019t entirely convinced by the Italian job when Ritchie and co-writer Matthew Read handed him scripts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was a little reticent at first when we started discussing the idea of Italy,\u201d he said. \u201cI like the idea of visiting a new place \u2013 tonally it gives it a different element cinematically \u2013 but my reticence was we\u2019ve seen a lot of Italian mafia, and some of my favorite pieces of screen work are that.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut in Guy\u2019s realm, and with Bene and all the great Italian actors, there\u2019s an element of class there and there\u2019s a great romanticism to it, and that\u2019s one thing we haven\u2019t seen before: the romance of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPorcaroli later expanded on her character, a countess and the stepdaughter of an Italian criminal. \u201cShe\u2019s an Italian countess, and she enters in this world, but she\u2019s not really interested in the business side of things,\u201d said the actress. \u201cShe falls in love with Eddie, and she tries to deal with Susie \u2013 she\u2019s scared and she\u2019s very emotional in that sense. She\u2019s a human creature who just tries to do her best, fighting between these many feelings that she feels.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tScodelario, who plays Eddie\u2019s tough business partner Susie, outlined the state of play as Season 2 begins. \u201cThey\u2019ve had a very successful year,\u201d she said. \u201cThey have expanded the empire really well. They\u2019ve done it abroad \u2013 secured all these piazzas \u2013 and business is going well, and things are working with, not against her, finally. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut she is starting to get a sense that he is becoming something that she can\u2019t control anymore and what does that mean for business? What does it mean for her place within this empire? She is definitely starting to feel more insecure about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe also noted that Susie\u2019s criminal background, growing up as Bobby\u2019s daughter, puts her at odds with the world of European aristocracy \u2013 and Eddie, who knows the world intimately.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo me, fundamentally Susie and Eddie never quite works, because they will always have these different lived experiences, and they will always come from different sides of the track \u2013 and in places like Britain and Italy, those class systems are still very important,\u201d said Scodelario. \u201cThey matter to heritage, to lineage. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s all connected and it isn\u2019t as simple as just choosing to step into that world \u2013 you can\u2019t. It\u2019s a space you must be invited into, and Susie is starting to understand that there\u2019ll be certain spaces that she doesn\u2019t belong in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJames said Season 2 was a chance to better explore the dark path Eddie had chosen, as he goes from a former UN peacekeeper at the start of the show to a ruthless crime boss. Ritchie and James have both likened the story to that of Michael Corleone in The Godfather movies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn a way, through Season 1, I wanted him to go further,\u201d said James. \u201cI wanted him to take deeper risks and make bigger mistakes, but Guy\u2019s feeling was of echoes of Corleone in the very first act of The Godfather \u2013 a civilian with a moral duty to his family, and he feels like he\u2019s just trying to get out of a fucked-up situation. Ultimately, he learns that he\u2019s quite good at the criminality side, and there\u2019s an elixir to it and an allure.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe reason to do a second season was there are elements that we hadn\u2019t really fully touched on. We hadn\u2019t plumbed Eddie\u2019s character, and there was an ability to do that, and to look at the moral complications of power. In Season 2, it\u2019s established that there are no apologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRitchie\u2019s process<\/p>\n

\n\tMultiple Gentlemen cast members have talked about Ritchie\u2019s on-set process, which often calls on actors to learn new versions of scripts in the moment, or ad-lib to improve a scene. James said this had become \u201d the DNA of the show,\u201d while Porcaroli noted with a laugh that, \u201cThat didn\u2019t even change when we spoke my language.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tScodelario added: \u201cWithin the first day it is terrifying and then slowly as the show goes on, you learn to trust it. You get good at it, and your brain patches in.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tShe credited Ritchie\u2019s process for encouraging actors to think on the spot. \u201cThe fact that Guy\u2019s open to that is very helpful and really great for us, because we can discover as we go along what works and what doesn\u2019t. We respect each other\u2019s opinions within that scope, and that\u2019s what filmmaking is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVinnie Jones<\/a>, who plays groundskeeper Geoff, worked with Ritchie on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch along with the upcoming action pic Viva La Madness, and was well aware of the showrunner and director\u2019s quirky style.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI settled the ship a little bit because I do tell other actors what to expect a little bit so they don\u2019t get so nervous,\u201d he said. \u201cI just go, \u2018No, it\u2019s all right, it happens to everyone.\u2019 If you are on the set and all of a sudden the director comes on feeding you lines, you could panic. And so we sort of say, \u2018Don\u2019t worry\u00a0\u2013 this is how it works.\u2019 It\u2019s just Guy thinking on the spur of the moment. He just sees it and it comes to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJones recalled this was exactly how the famous \u201cIt\u2019s been emotional\u201d line from his character Big Chris in Lock, Stock came about. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou\u2019ve got to do it at the spur of the moment, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s inspirational that he can do it,\u201d said Jones. \u201cWith me and Lock, Stock he just said, \u2018What\u2019s that thing you say when you leave?\u2019 Well, \u2018It\u2019s been emotional\u2019 has become one of the British icon sayings of movie history, which is fantastic. But I can tell you now, that was at four in the morning, and we were just going home\u2026 It was the last scene, and he just for some reason said, \u2018What\u2019s that thing you say?’\u201d<\/p>\n
