She swiftly and lucidly foiled an attempted aggravated fraud, allowing the Carabinieri to apprehend four people red-handed. The scenario was always the same: in the early afternoon of Easter Saturday, a voice on the phone identified itself as a Carabinieri officer and fabricated a credible story: a jewelry store robbery had been committed in Rome, and the car used by the thieves had a license plate matching that of the woman’s husband. For this reason, another Carabinieri officer was due to visit her home shortly thereafter to verify that the jewelry in her possession was not the stolen one. A tried-and-true pretext, designed to gain access to the home and steal the valuables. This time, however, the plan didn’t work. The elderly woman’s family—some of whom had attended awareness-raising meetings organized by the Carabinieri specifically to prevent this type of crime—immediately recognized the scam’s pattern and dialed 112 before the criminals even approached the house.

At this point, the Carabinieri from the Carpineto Romano and Montelanico stations, coordinated by the Colleferro Company’s NORM Operations Center, responded. Quickly, the officers prepared a two-pronged operation: part of the unit entered the home to reassure the elderly woman and manage the situation from inside; the rest of the personnel took up observation positions outside, ready to intervene at the first suspicious movement. The wait was short. A 20-year-old man appeared at the door, exiting a Fiat 500 in which three accomplices were waiting. Immediately stopped by the Carabinieri stationed outside, the other occupants of the vehicle were also arrested and identified: two men aged 49 and 20, and two women aged 33 and 22, all of Campanian origin and already known to law enforcement, with the exception of the youngest. An immediate search of the vehicle—which turned out to be a rental—led to the seizure of the 20-year-old’s cell phone and several gold items. These items, however, were not related to the attempted Carpineto Romano scam: they appear to be linked to a similar heist carried out that same morning, which is currently being investigated and likely the proceeds of other heists.

The Velletri Court Judge confirmed the arrests, ordering the 49-year-old to remain in residence. The other three suspects were released pending trial. The operation is part of a season of intensified controls by the Frascati Carabinieri Unit into the phenomenon of scams targeting the elderly—crimes that target the most vulnerable segments of the population and often remain undetected. This time, a woman’s clear-sightedness and the Carabinieri’s swift action stopped the scammers before they could cause harm.

A fake Carabiniere scam was foiled and four people were arrested.
