Chery’s Japan entry is less self-assuming than BYD’s, but can a potential manufacturing commitment hold sway with regulators? By Stewart Burnett
Chinese automaker Chery and Japanese auto parts retailer Autobacs Seven plan to sell electric vehicles (EVs) in Japan from 2027 under a new brand developed through a Singapore-registered joint venture, according to an 11 May report by Nikkei. Long China’s biggest vehicle exporter, the automaker is taking a roundabout approach to breaking into one of the world’s most impenetrable vehicle markets; whether it can overcome the headwinds faced by compatriot automakers like BYD is another matter.
