15-year-old Nishiyama Misa has been named in Japan’s five-member team for the upcoming Asian Games and Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
In-form Nishiyama clinched her maiden NHK Trophy earlier on Saturday (16 May), edging past fellow teenager and Paris 2024 Olympian Kishi Rina.
Nishiyama’s victory at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium came less than a month after she won the All-Japan All-Around Championships, where she also beat Kishi.
The teen prodigy will make her senior international debut in front of her home crowd at the Asian Games, scheduled for 19 September-4 October in Aichi-Nagoya.
Kishi, 18, also made the cut for the Asian Games and world championships, alongside the experienced Sugihara Aiko, last year’s world champion on floor exercise.
Nishiyama, Kishi and Sugihara were assured of their tickets to the Worlds on account of finishing inside the top three at the 2026 NHK Trophy.
Okamura Mana, the reigning Asian Games balance beam champion, and 17-year-old Nakamura Haruka, the 2023 junior world all-around and team champion, were also picked for the two international meets.
The five-strong men’s team for the Asian Games and worlds will be announced on Sunday, following the completion of the NHK Trophy.
