Ghostwire: Tokyo is cheaper than ever on Steam. Bethesda’s open-world adventure currently costs just around $6 instead of $60. In return, players get a deserted Tokyo filled with ghosts, yokai and Japanese folklore.
What if a city of millions were almost completely depopulated within moments? Ghostwire: Tokyo explores exactly that scenario, blending a modern metropolis with supernatural horror and Japanese folklore. Nearly four years after its launch in March 2022, the game has received its first-ever 90% discount on Steam, according to SteamDB. That brings the Steam Deck Verified title down to around $6 instead of $60.
The story, unsurprisingly, takes place in Tokyo. There are hardly any people left, however. A mysterious occultist has made the city’s population disappear and replaced them with ghosts and demonic creatures. Players step into the role of young Akito, who sets out together with the spirit companion KK to find those responsible, save his family and uncover the source of the chaos.
Along the way, Akito encounters yokai and many other creatures drawn from Japanese folklore. According to German gaming magazine PC Games, the combination of an open world and a richly recreated version of Tokyo creates a particularly atmospheric experience. Combat takes place from a first-person perspective, but instead of conventional firearms, players use elemental powers such as wind, water and fire. While PC Games liked the concept, the review concluded that the combat system ultimately lacks depth.
The story also loses momentum rather quickly, which is why PC Games awarded the game only 7 out of 10 points overall. On Steam, Ghostwire: Tokyo has around 20,000 reviews with a solid 82% positive rating. On Metacritic, critics gave it a Metascore of 75, while players awarded it a User Score of 7.2. Although the review scores are not outstanding, the game should still be worth a look for fans of open-world adventures.
