For a long time, Japan’s futuristic outlook on tech has made it an inspiration to artists worldwide. As well as a rich history of sci-fi anime and manga, this also extends to the LEGO sphere, where cyberpunk builds often feature more than a hint of oriental influence. For a long time, Ids de Jong has wanted to interpret the Nakagin Capsule Tower which stood in central Tokyo until a few years ago. Having made its debut at Skaerbaek Fan Weekend last year, we now have photos of Ids’ completed tribute! And what a tribute it is…
Like many LEGO sci-fi buildings nowadays, the tower is lit up from all angles for that perfect broody dystopian ambience. And like any good sci-fi design, Ids has used elements of the real-world building to keep it recognisable to us present-dwellers.
That extends up the building too, where we can get a closer look at the capsules which give the tower its name. I suppose a downside of this style is that it looks very climbable for graffiti artists!
The top is very distinctive, by virtue of its angular shape and its dark rusted colour, offsetting the new and yellowed whites elsewhere. That brick-built Japanese signwork is excellent. And you might spot some printed parts from an early LEGO Star Wars set here, too!
And just to prove photos of this build have been a long time coming, here it and its proud builder are, as snapped by our Jake at Skaerbaek last year!
