Mitsubishi Fuso reaches carbon neutrality at all Japan plants

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp said on July 17 that all of its manufacturing sites in Japan achieved carbon neutrality in 2025, marking a milestone in the commercial vehicle maker’s domestic production network.

The achievement covers four production bases: the Kawasaki plant in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, which makes trucks and industrial engines; the Nakatsu plant in Kanagawa Prefecture, which produces transmissions; Mitsubishi Fuso Bus Manufacturing Co in Toyama Prefecture, which makes buses; and body builder Pabco in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Carbon neutrality refers to reducing greenhouse gas emissions calculated on a carbon dioxide equivalent basis to effectively net zero through a combination of cuts, absorption and removal, and offsets. Mitsubishi Fuso reduced emissions from production by switching electricity used at domestic production sites to renewable energy sources, installing solar power systems for self-consumption, and implementing energy-saving measures in manufacturing processes.

It also procured carbon credits to achieve carbon neutrality for the 2025 calendar year and the first quarter of 2026. The target was reached on a balance-sheet basis, with certified carbon credits used to offset residual greenhouse gas emissions that were difficult to eliminate after emissions-reduction efforts.

The company plans to maintain carbon neutrality from April 2026 onward through continued carbon dioxide reduction measures.

Mitsubishi Fuso’s environmental efforts are supported by ISO 14001 and ISO 50001, international management system standards for environmental management and energy management. ISO 14001 provides a framework for managing environmental impacts across corporate activities, while ISO 50001 focuses on improving energy performance and efficiency.

The release provided additional detail on recent steps at individual sites. Mitsubishi Fuso Bus Manufacturing began operating on 100% effectively renewable energy in 2023, while the Kawasaki and Nakatsu plants reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 20% from 2015 levels. In 2022, Mitsubishi Fuso added about 14,000 square meters of self-consumption solar panels at the Kawasaki plant and shifted all procured electricity at the Kawasaki and Nakatsu plants to renewable sources.

The company also said its Tramagal plant in Portugal, which produces light-duty trucks for Europe, has achieved carbon neutrality.

Mitsubishi Fuso is part of the ARCHION group and is pursuing decarbonization through sustainable production as well as development of zero-emission vehicles. Japan’s manufacturing sector has increasingly turned to renewable power procurement, efficiency upgrades and carbon credits as companies work toward emissions targets in line with broader decarbonization policies.
