(Image credit: Instagram) Dan Ticktum won Round 14 of the Tokyo E-Prix last weekend while the championship leaders struggled throughout the race weekend. The Cupra Kiro driver clinched victory at the Tokyo Street Circuit after overtaking Andretti’s Jake Dennis, who lost power in the closing moments and effectively handed away the win. Ticktum has now shared a message for the haters who misunderstood his radio message about Dennis before he crossed the finish line.
Dan Ticktum explains the real meaning behind his radio message during Round 14 race
Andretti looked set for victory before Jake Dennis lost power on the final lap, allowing Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum to overtake him and claim the win. However, Ticktum later received hate messages over a radio message that was apparently misinterpreted by some fans.Known for never mincing his words, Ticktum shared a video message for the haters in which he explained his side of the story.Ticktum said in the video, “Hello ladies and gentlemen, I hope you’re all doing very well. This is a video that some people would probably advise me not to make, or at the very least would say it’s pointless. However, as a lot of you know, I try to be a human behind the camera and wear my heart on my sleeve and be honest and approachable and all the rest of it, so firstly thank you very much everyone for their overwhelming support, I’ve had a flurry of positive messages over the last 20 hours or so and yeah, really, really appreciate all your support, massively.”Coming to the point, he said, “On the slightly more negative note now, so there’s some people obviously that have commented on the race and my radio messages between the Andretti team and Jake and myself. Some people obviously are, you know, don’t understand racing too well and they’re just asking and that’s fine, but there’s other people who are obviously just down my throat saying I lied and all the rest of it, so I just want to clear it up, again, might be pointless but I’d like to clear it up. So essentially when Jake got past me, we were similar on energy, he was slightly up on me and we had a good gap to everybody behind, so I didn’t want to fight with him to bring everybody else into the fight, I wanted to just keep it a two-horse race basically.”“So that was the message I was trying to get to Andretti, that I wouldn’t attack Jake or go for a dive down the inside and lose us time. I was happy with P2 really at that point in the race, considering where I started and how my season’s been. It just happened that he got his power cut on the last lap on the last straight, so yes, while the overtake may have looked spectacular and obviously great, it wasn’t the hardest overtake of my life. And Jake even said himself that he got the power cut, check his Instagram, so it wasn’t like I lied. Jake didn’t even get the message that I wasn’t trying to fight him,” he added.In a final message to the haters, he said, “So yeah, I mean to everyone who’s at me for that, I mean you’re really clutching at straws here to hate on me and it’s quite hilarious to be honest, but for the people who just didn’t understand, that’s what happened. So I hope that clears it up and to the people who are still writing hate, I won. So sort of, f*** you really,” he signed off.With his first win of the season, Dan Ticktum moved up to 15th in the Drivers’ Standings with 54 points.
