Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused the United States and Israel of undermining regional peace and stability through attacks on Iran, saying that Tehran has never sought unrest in the region.
Pezeshkian made the remarks in a phone call with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday, thanking Japan for its positive position on the need to end the war, Mizan news agency reports.
The Iranian president said the US and Israel had disrupted regional peace and stability by attacking Iran, assassinating Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, killing large numbers of civilians, including schoolchildren in Minab, and destroying civilian infrastructure.
Pezeshkian said Iran had not acted outside international law and had consistently sought to improve relations with its neighbours.
He expressed hope that Japan’s diplomatic efforts to establish peace and stability in the region would bear fruit and prevent what he described as crimes and warmongering by aggressive powers in the region.
Takaichi, for her part, stressed Tokyo’s support for diplomatic efforts to end the war, describing them as being in the long-term interests of Iran and the region.
She also welcomed progress in negotiations between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz and expressed hope that, following the successful conclusion of the talks, transit through the waterway would be reopened as soon as possible.
The Japanese prime minister also asked Pezeshkian to use Iran’s influence to prevent an escalation of tensions in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The two leaders reaffirmed their determination to continue dialogue and develop the historic relations between the two countries.
