WAIKIKI, Hawaii (Island News) — Takagi Coffee, a Japanese kissaten-style café, is opening its pop up in Tsurutontan in Waikiki on Thursday for a month full of matcha, soufflé pancakes and more.
Takagi Coffee is opening on Thursday morning, Aug. 11, 2026, at the Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki. The first location in Hawaii — with other cafés in Japan and Los Angeles — offers Japanese-style food and beverages including matcha, lattes, soufflé pancakes, katsu sando and other ono desserts and dishes.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, the cafe will begin the rollout of the pop up with the first 60 customers welcome each day. The pop up is expected to be open for a month in the heart of Waikiki.
To find Takagi Coffee, Tsurutontan is located in Building B of the Royal Hawaiian Center at level 3, B-305. When entering the Japanese restaurant, you’ll notice a white curtain that says Takagi Coffee to your left. The secluded area for the café offers a cozy ambience to enjoy even cozier treats and drinks.
The menu includes a mango and strawberry matcha — where you are served a cup with the fruit and cream, paired with a silver pitcher to pour the matcha inside and mix. Noteworthy to Takagi Coffee are the “paffles” which are three soufflé pancakes prepared in a taco style with six different fruits to choose from as the filling.
The matcha soufflé pancakes were another standout dessert, covered in a pool of matcha that each soft bite of pancake soaks up the rich green tea flavor. On the savory side, the katsu sando comes with crispy chicken which is pillowed by bread and light cabbage slaw.
