Bank Indonesia is anticipated to maintain its benchmark rate at 5.75% during Wednesday’s meeting. The central bank’s surprising decision to hold in July signals that policymakers are increasingly weighing rupiah stability against growth support. Although currency stability remains the top concern, BI seems more inclined to employ non-rate measures such as Bank Indonesia Rupiah Securities (SRBI) yields and currency market intervention rather than an immediate rate increase. The ongoing leadership transition at BI also diminishes the chance of an August adjustment, as Acting Governor Destry Damayanti is expected to use her inaugural meeting to emphasize continuity instead of an unexpected tightening.

China will publish its July activity indicators on Monday. Expectations point to continued weak momentum following soft PMI data earlier this month. A slight recovery is forecast, yet retail sales are seen staying subdued at 1.7% year-on-year. Fixed asset investment is projected to ease further to -6.3% year-on-year on a year-to-date basis, while industrial production remains relatively robust, slowing to 5.0% year-on-year. After July’s Politburo meeting, which stressed faster fiscal spending and the use of bond proceeds, investment may start to pick up in the months ahead, though this will not be reflected in the July figures. The 70-city property price index is also due Monday, with focus on whether the recent price stabilization in tier-1 and tier-2 cities persists.

On Thursday, China will announce its loan prime rate decision. No alteration is expected, with the 1-year and 5-year rates holding at 3.0% and 3.5%, respectively.

Taiwan will release export order data on Thursday. Growth is forecast to accelerate to 67.5% year-on-year, driven by sustained strong demand from technology segments.

For Japan, the preliminary second-quarter GDP, scheduled for 17 August, is expected to hold steady at 0.5% quarter-on-quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis. Private consumption is seen as the primary growth driver. Japan will also report headline and core CPI on 21 August, with markets anticipating a moderate rise to 2.0% and 1.8% year-on-year, respectively. The expected uptick in headline inflation would push the national figure back to the Bank of Japan‘s 2% target for the first time in several months, largely due to ongoing import cost pressures.

India will release trade figures on Monday, with foreign-exchange reserves for the week ending 14 August due on Friday.

Singapore’s July non-oil domestic exports are slated for 17 August. June’s increase was 20.7% year-on-year, a marked slowdown from May’s 38.4% rise.
