Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Japan from August 24 to 27, leading what he said would be the largest-ever Indian business delegation to the country, comprising around 200 industry representatives.

The visit will focus on strengthening the India-Japan strategic and economic partnership through meetings with Japanese government leaders and industry representatives.

Ahead of the visit, Goyal invited Japanese businesses to deepen their investments and partnerships in India while speaking at a dinner hosted in New Delhi by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for a Japanese delegation led by Yamanashi Prefecture Governor Kotaro Nagasaki. Representatives from JETRO and Invest UP were also present.

Referring to the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in New Delhi in July 2026, Goyal highlighted Japan’s target of investing 10 trillion yen in India over the next decade.

He said investments in areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, batteries, energy and next-generation mobility could play an important role in shaping the future of both economies.

Goyal said the growing economic partnership between the two countries was already visible through major infrastructure and industrial projects across India. He cited the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, Japanese-assisted metro systems in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai, as well as 11 Japanese industrial townships spread across eight states.

More than 1,400 Japanese companies currently operate in India, including Suzuki, Toyota and Honda in the automobile sector, Sony in electronics, and Hitachi and Mitsubishi in engineering, the minister said.Bilateral trade between India and Japan stood at around $27.5 billion in FY 2025-26, while Japan is now India’s fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment, according to Goyal.
