Japan’s overseas shipments set a new monthly benchmark in July, according to official data released on Thursday, reflecting sustained international demand and buttressing an economy that leans more heavily on foreign sales as domestic spending stays weak. The total value of exports jumped 23.2% compared with the same month last year, reaching an unprecedented 11.5 trillion yen ($72.62 billion), which exceeded the consensus projection of a 19.9% gain and marked an acceleration from June’s 19.3% increase.

The trade release follows other figures from earlier in the week indicating that Japan’s economy grew for a third straight quarter during April-June, with robust export activity compensating for lackluster household consumption and capital expenditure. The durability of export performance may strengthen the argument for the Bank of Japan to proceed with policy normalization, with a potential rate hike anticipated as soon as September.

Shipments to the United States advanced 22% year-on-year in July, while those destined for China increased 25.8%. Imports expanded 27.8% from a year earlier, slightly outpacing the predicted 26.5% rise, leaving Japan with a trade shortfall of 634.5 billion yen—less than the anticipated deficit of 680 billion yen.

The Middle East conflict earlier this year interrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, causing a spike in crude oil, petrochemical, and other raw material prices, which inflated Japan’s import expenditures given its substantial dependence on foreign energy sources. Even though oil prices moderated in June following partial restoration of shipping lanes, the effect on import values tends to emerge with a delay, as customs-based pricing reflects contracts finalized weeks prior.

Elevated commodity and energy expenses have also propagated through supply chains, enabling numerous Japanese producers to keep transferring higher costs to international buyers. Consequently, export values have been buoyed by increased prices, even though the pace of volume growth stayed modest.
