Japan’s Defense Ministry is planning to request a record-high budget of around 9 trillion yen, or about 57 billion dollars, for fiscal 2027. The ministry will also request funding for measures such as the introduction of AI-based decision support systems, without specifying the projected costs.
Some costs are yet to be projected because discussions to revise Japan’s three key national security documents are expected to continue to the year end.
The ministry’s request will focus on defense capabilities to respond to new methods of warfare that utilize AI and drones. It will also prioritize efforts to reinforce the foundation of the nation’s defense and secure the capability to fight for prolonged periods.
The ministry plans to set up an AI-based decision support system at the Joint Operations Command, which oversees the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces.
It also plans to introduce enhanced cloud systems and develop underwater-launched hypersonic missiles.
The ministry is also eyeing the establishment of a system for the government to acquire equipment manufacturing facilities and entrust production and management to private companies. It will also review the salary system for Self-Defense Force personnel.
The ministry is also considering setting up a new bureau in charge of policies related to international cooperation.
