TOPPAN Starts AI Menopause Health-Risk Study With University of Tokyo

TOKYO, Sept. 9, 2026 — TOPPAN Co., a unit of TOPPAN Holdings, has begun joint research with the University of Tokyo to develop and validate an artificial intelligence model that predicts future health risks for women going through menopause, the company said.

The companies signed their research agreement on July 21 and started the project in September. The study will use data from about 20,000 real-world clinical cases collected through TOPPAN’s DATuM IDEA medical-information analysis and provision service, which the group has offered since April 2022.

The research will examine changes over time in test values during perimenopause, a stage around menopause when hormone levels and physical condition can fluctuate substantially. The planned AI model is intended to estimate an individual’s future disease risks based on her health status and physical characteristics, rather than applying uniform assessment thresholds.

TOPPAN will provide data, secure data-management and analytical capabilities, and AI technology for developing and testing the model. The University of Tokyo Hospital’s Department of Women’s Surgery, working with Professor Miyuki Harada of the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology unit, will contribute clinical expertise in women’s health research.

The data being prepared for the model consists of anonymized processed medical information. The University of Tokyo Hospital will assess the model’s validity from a clinical-medicine perspective, with the aim of establishing medical evidence for its reliability.

Menopause can involve substantial changes in hormone levels and other biological indicators, raising risks associated with lifestyle-related diseases as well as bone and cardiovascular conditions. Individual variation in symptoms and test results has limited approaches based on fixed test-value benchmarks, TOPPAN said.

The project is scheduled to continue through March 2028. TOPPAN said it will examine the practical application of the findings in personalized prevention and medical-care solutions, including women’s health issues from adolescence to old age and lifestyle-disease prevention for both women and men.
