{"id":10325,"date":"2026-04-23T03:44:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T03:44:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/10325\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T03:44:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T03:44:29","slug":"asia-markets-today-nikkei-225-hang-seng-index-kospi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/10325\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia markets today: Nikkei 225, Hang Seng Index, Kospi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kazuhiro Nogi | AFP | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Japan and South Korea stocks hit record highs Thursday, trailing overnight gains on Wall Street after President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s extended a ceasefire with Iran, boosting investor sentiment alongside strong corporate earnings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a>\u00a0extended a two-week U.S. ceasefire on Tuesday, saying it was warranted due to Tehran&#8217;s &#8220;seriously fractured&#8221; government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,&#8221; Trump said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116444507618729432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Truth Social post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ceasefire will remain in place until Iran submits a proposal or talks conclude, while the U.S. military continues its blockade of Iranian ports, Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the timeline remains uncertain. Iranian state media reported Wednesday that Tehran&#8217;s negotiators would not attend talks with the U.S., calling them a &#8220;waste of time.&#8221; A lack of commitment from Iran reportedly prompted Vice President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/jd-vance-us-vice-president\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JD Vance<\/a>\u00a0to pause his trip to join peace talks. Meanwhile, Iran&#8217;s navy also said that it had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/22\/strait-of-hormuz-ships-attacked-iran-war.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seized two container ships<\/a>\u00a0in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices rise, with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@CL.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> West Texas Intermediate<\/a> futures rose 0.49% to $93.42 per barrel as of 9:33 p.m. ET. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@LCO.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brent crude<\/a>\u00a0added 0.28% to $102.20 per barrel.  <\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.N225\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikkei 225<\/a> briefly touched an all-time intraday high of 60,013.98, before slipping 0.31% on profit taking. <\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s manufacturing activity expanded at its fastest pace in four years in April, according to the S&amp;P Global flash <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.spglobal.com\/Public\/Home\/PressRelease\/f65b1852016d49a5abde92a6b742f9bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Purchasing Managers&#8217; Index<\/a>, as firms boosted output amid supply concerns linked to Middle East tensions.<\/p>\n<p>Index heavyweight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/9984.T-JP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Softbank Group Corp<\/a> gained over 6%. A Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-23\/softbank-seeks-10-billion-margin-loan-backed-by-openai-shares?utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_content=business&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=linkedin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> said the company is taking on more debt in its push for AI, seeking a $10 billion margin loan backed by its OpenAI holdings.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea&#8217;s Kospi also reached an all-time intraday high of 6,538.72,  advancing 1.58%.  The small-cap Kosdaq was 0.58% higher.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bok.or.kr\/eng\/bbs\/E0000634\/view.do?nttId=10097645&amp;searchCnd=1&amp;searchKwd=&amp;depth2=400417&amp;depth3=400423&amp;depth=400423&amp;pageUnit=10&amp;pageIndex=1&amp;programType=newsDataEng&amp;menuNo=400423&amp;oldMenuNo=400423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The country&#8217;s economy<\/a> grew more than expected in the first three months of the year, recording the fastest growth since the third quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The 1.7% growth in January to March from the previous quarter exceeded Reuters&#8217; estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/south-korea-economy-likely-returned-growth-q1-2026-04-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">of 1.0%<\/a> and rebounded from the 0.2% contraction in the prior quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung Electronics shares hit a new intraday record of 227,000. Investors were also monitoring labor developments, as the company&#8217;s unions expected more than 30,000 workers to attend a rally in South Korea on Thursday, ahead of a planned strike next month. <\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s S&amp;P\/ASX 200 traded choppy, fallling 0.76%.<\/p>\n<p>Mainland China&#8217;s CSI300 index rose 0.35%, while Hong Kong&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.HSI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hang Seng index<\/a>\u00a0fell 0.51% ahead of the release of the city&#8217;s March inflation data.<\/p>\n<p>Stock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@SP.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P 500 futures<\/a>\u00a0slipped 0.1%, while the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@ND.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq 100 futures<\/a>\u00a0were around the flatline.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@DJ.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a>\u00a0fell by 173 points, or 0.4%.<\/p>\n<p>During Wednesday&#8217;s regular session, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P 500<\/a>\u00a0added 1.05% to finish at 7,137.90, while the tech-heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a> added 1.64% to settle at 24,657.57.
