Japanese drone company Terra Drone said its Terra A1 interceptor drone, developed with its Ukrainian partner Amazing Drones, has now entered initial operational deployment in Ukraine. The company announced its investment in Amazing Drones at the end of March.<\/p>\n
The jointly developed interceptor is reportedly capable of reaching speeds of up to 300 km\/h. The move drew a swift diplomatic protest, with a senior Russian foreign ministry official summoning Japan’s ambassador to Russia, Akira Muto, to formally object to the investment.<\/p>\n
Ukraine is home to roughly 1,000 drone-related companies, many of which struggle to secure funding, scale up production, and expand into international markets. The partnership with Terra Drone is expected to shore up Amazing Drones’ operations and accelerate the development of more capable interceptor systems.<\/p>\n
Strategic Gains<\/p>\n
With Russia’s invasion, drones have moved to the center of modern warfare, and collaboration with battle-tested Ukrainian firms gives Japanese companies a rare opportunity to absorb hard-won expertise. Terra Drone is reportedly exploring partnerships with additional Ukrainian companies as well.<\/p>\n
Compared with interceptor missiles, interceptor drones are relatively inexpensive to produce, making them an attractive component of national defense. Japan is already considering a coastal drone defense system called SHIELD and is moving to ease restrictions<\/a> on weapons exports.<\/p>\n Japan is not alone in moving toward drone-centered defense cooperation. Germany has signed a defense pact with Ukraine centered on the joint production of AI-equipped drones, while the United Kingdom has pledged to deliver 120,000 drones to the country.<\/p>\n
