Directed against Russian expansionism in the Far East, it was a cornerstone of British and Japanese policy in Asia until after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/World-War-I\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World War I<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">The alliance served Japan in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Russo-Japanese-War\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russo-Japanese War<\/a> (1904\u201305) by discouraging France, Russia\u2019s European ally, from entering the war on the Russian side. It was renewed in 1905 and again in 1911 after Japan\u2019s annexation of Korea. Following an unsuccessful attempt to bring the U.S. into the alliance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Washington-Conference-1921-1922\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Conference<\/a> of 1921\u201322, Britain allowed it to lapse.
