The \u2060Kremlin has said that relations with Japan had been reduced to zero over Tokyo’s “unfriendly” stance toward Russia, and there \u200bwas no ongoing dialogue toward peace.<\/p>\n
Russia \u200cand Japan \u200cnever signed a formal \u200bWorld War II peace treaty, with the main obstacle being an unresolved territorial dispute \u2060over the Kuril Islands, known in Japan \u2060as the Northern Territories.<\/p>\n
In her inaugural address to parliament on \u200bFriday, Prime Minister \u2060Sanae Takaichi said: “Although Japan-Russia relations are in a tough spot, \u2060the Japanese \u200bgovernment\u2019s position remains unchanged, aiming to \u200bresolve the territorial issue and conclude \u200ba \u200cpeace treaty,” according to Russia’s TASS state news agency.<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, said Friday that Russia’s relations with Japan “have \u200cbeen reduced to zero” over what he cast as Tokyo’s “unfriendly stance” toward Moscow.<\/p>\n
“There is no dialogue, and it is impossible \u200bto \u200bdiscuss the issue of a peace \u200btreaty without dialogue,” he told \u2060reporters at a daily briefing. “Russia has never been in favor of ending this dialogue.”<\/p>\n
