If the dry run is successful, these automated bagmen could potentially become a more permanent part of the workflow by 2027, <a href=\"https:\/\/press.jal.co.jp\/en\/release\/202604\/009502.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">per a press release by Japan Airlines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QSzyz3Vho60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">A demonstration<\/a> of the automated bag handlers was put on this week, revealing a 130-cm (4 ft, 3.2 in) robot \u201cpushing\u201d cargo onto a conveyor belt next to a passenger plane and waving to a colleague.<\/p>\n<p>Yoshiteru Suzuki, president of JAL Ground Service, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/articles\/-\/74999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kyodo News agency<\/a> that utilizing robots for strenuous physical labor would \u201cinevitably reduce workers\u2019 burden, providing significant benefits to employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he noted that certain tasks, such as safety management, can only be handled by humans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile airports appear highly automated and standardized, their back-end operations still rely heavily on human labour and face serious labor shortages,\u201d Tomohiro Uchida, president of GMO AI and Robotics, said.<\/p>\n<p>JAL and Japan Airlines GMO Internet Group anticipate that the experiment, which is meant to end in 2028, will lessen the workload of human employees as inbound tourism increases.<\/p>\n<p>The humanoid robots would also provide extra staffing to overburdened baggage handlers amid the country\u2019s labor shortage \u2014 though they would need regular breaks to recharge, literally.<\/p>\n<p>Robots can operate continuously for about two to three hours, according to The Guardian, and they\u2019re also projected to be used for other tasks such as cleaning aircraft cabins.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.40082079;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39232222\" width=\"826\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-according-jal-test-use-126629285.jpg\" alt=\"A humanoid robot pushes a cargo container during a media demonstration inside Japan Airlines's airplane hangar at Haneda airport.\" class=\"wp-image-39232222\"  \/>A humanoid robot pushes a cargo container inside Japan Airlines\u2019s airplane hangar at Haneda airport. via REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Japan has been struggling to deal with a surge in tourists from overseas. More than 7 million people visited the country in the first two months of 2026 alone, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. Last year, a record Japan saw a record 42.7 million visitors.<\/p>\n<p>One estimate showed that Japan would need more than 6.5 million foreign workers by 2040 in order to reach its growth target as the workforce decreases, The Guardian reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The bots have got this in the bag.
