{"id":15002,"date":"2026-05-01T00:18:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T00:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/15002\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T00:18:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T00:18:07","slug":"australia-and-japan-markets-climb-looking-past-iran-war-escalation-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/15002\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia and Japan markets climb, looking past Iran war escalation fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pedestrians at Pitt Street Mall in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday, July 24, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Brendon Thorne | Bloomberg | Getty Images  <\/p>\n<p>Markets in Australia and Japan mostly rose Friday, mirroring gains on Wall Street that saw both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq Composite<\/a> reach new highs.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as investors took in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/30\/apple-aapl-q2-2026-earnings-report.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strong<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/30\/caterpillar-cat-q1-earnings.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earnings<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CAT\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caterpillar<\/a>, looking past weaker-than-expected economic data and threats of escalation in Iran by U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@LCO.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brent<\/a>\u00a0crude prices had risen to top $126 a barrel after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/30\/trump-military-plans-iran-briefing-centcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Axios reported<\/a> that the U.S. military would brief  Trump on potential action against Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Brent closed at $110.40 a barrel, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@CL.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S West Texas Intermediate<\/a> was 0.61% up at $105.71, as of 7:46 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the U.S. Commerce Department reported that gross domestic product rose at a 2% annualized pace in the first quarter. While that was an increase from 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025, it was below the 2.2% consensus estimate by Wall Street economists.<\/p>\n<p>Most major Asian markets are closed due to the May Day holiday. <\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.N225\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikkei 225<\/a> was marginally up to start the day, but the Topix was 0.62% down. <\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.AXJO\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P\/ASX 200<\/a> was up 0.98%, on pace to snap an eight-day losing streak.<\/p>\n<p>Overnight in the U.S., the S&amp;P 500 rose 1.02% to close at a record of 7,209.01, its first close above the 7,200 threshold. The tech-heavy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a>\u00a0jumped 0.89%, hitting new intraday and closing records as well. <\/p>\n<p>The blue-chip\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a>\u00a0added 1.62%.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. futures for all three major indexes were marginally up after the session, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@SP.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P 500 futures<\/a>\u00a0advancing 0.16%, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@ND.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq 100 futures<\/a>\u00a0were little changed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@DJ.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a>\u00a0added 79 points, or about 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNBC&#8217;s Lisa Kailai Han and Sean Conlon contributed to this report. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Choose CNBC as your preferred source on Google and never miss a moment from the most trusted name in business news.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pedestrians at Pitt Street Mall in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
