{"id":17729,"date":"2026-05-06T02:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T02:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/17729\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T02:33:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T02:33:17","slug":"japan-and-eu-to-enhance-cooperation-on-regulating-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/17729\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan and EU to enhance cooperation on regulating social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS \u2013 Japan and the European Union agreed Tuesday to strengthen their cooperation over regulations regarding social media and other online platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the agreement, reached at the fourth ministerial meeting of the Japan-EU Digital Partnership framework held in Brussels, regulatory authorities of the two sides will promote talks on taking measures against illegal content and ensuring transparency in implementation rules.<\/p>\n<p>From Japan, communications minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, digital transformation minister Hisashi Matsumoto and parliamentary vice industry minister Toshiyuki Ochi took part in the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>A joint statement adopted at the meeting called for Japan-EU cooperation in areas that are important in light of economic security, such as data flow and communications infrastructure, in addition to artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other advanced technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Henna Virkkunen, executive vice president of the European Commission, the executive organ of the EU, said at a news conference that cooperating with like-minded countries such as Japan is essential.<\/p>\n<p>Hayashi said that Japan and the EU share a need to protect minors on online platforms, adding that Japan plans to take appropriate measures while watching discussions in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>The Japan-EU Digital Partnership was launched at a meeting between Japanese and EU leaders in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Under the framework, Japan and the EU are advancing cooperation in a wide range of areas such as AI, semiconductors and communications infrastructure.
