(Japan Joint Staff)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Chinese pilots last year dramatically scaled back their approaches toward Japanese airspace, reducing Japan\u2019s air force response to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/asia_pacific\/2025-10-14\/japan-scrambles-airspace-incursions-19420832.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lowest level<\/a> in more than a decade, according to Japan\u2019s Joint Staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Japan Air Self-Defense Force pilots scrambled 595 times to meet foreign aircraft during fiscal 2025, according to data released on the Joint Staff\u2019s website on April 17. Japan\u2019s fiscal year runs from April to March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">That\u2019s about 15% fewer intercepts than in fiscal 2024, when Japanese aircraft met foreign challengers 704 times. It\u2019s also the lowest number of scrambles since the 567 recorded in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">China remained the most frequent challenger in fiscal 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Of Japan\u2019s intercepts, 366 involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/asia_pacific\/2025-12-08\/japan-china-fighter-radar-lock-20020394.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chinese aircraft<\/a>, the lowest number since 2012, when Japan scrambled to meet Chinese pilots 306 times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">In fiscal 2024, Japan intercepted 464 Chinese aircraft, and in the previous fiscal year, 479.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Russia logged the second largest number of airspace challenges. Japan scrambled fighters 214 times against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/asia_pacific\/2025-12-11\/japan-us-air-force-china-russia-tupolev-f-15-20055003.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Russian fighters<\/a>, compared to 237 times during the previous fiscal year, a number the Joint Staff called \u201caverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Approaching Chinese aircraft typically penetrate Japan\u2019s 230-mile-wide air defense identification zone but turn back before reaching territorial airspace, a 14-mile-wide zone that begins at the coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">While intercepts decreased, they remain at \u201ca high level,\u201d Japan Chief of Staff Gen. (Japan Coast Guard)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cWe believe it is necessary to consider various factors to determine the reasons for the decrease,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Chinese drone approaches also declined to 16 in fiscal 2025, compared to 23 in the previous year, Uchikura said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Japan\u2019s Ministry of Defense warned in its 2024 and 2025 white papers that it may shoot down unmanned aircraft entering its airspace if necessary to protect the \u201clives and properties of people within Japanese territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Despite the decline in incidents, Chinese and Russian pilots in many instances grew bolder, according to the Defense Ministry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">On May 3, Japanese fighters scrambled in response to a helicopter launched from a Chinese coast guard vessel inside the Senkakus\u2019 territorial limit, according to a ministry news release at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">On Dec. 4, Japan alleged that a Chinese J-15 launched from the aircraft carrier Liaoning \u201cintermittently illuminated\u201d two Japanese F-15s, which had scrambled in response to potential airspace violations near Okinawa. A radar lock on a potential target can be a precursor to a missile attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Japan lodged a protest with China over the incident.
