{"id":19031,"date":"2026-05-08T06:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T06:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/19031\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T06:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T06:37:07","slug":"video-rainy-competition-at-nahas-annual-dragon-boat-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/19031\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: Rainy competition at Naha\u2019s annual dragon boat races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mb2-plus4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260507_071902000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"Two dragon boats racing.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"default-font lh-default ma0 mh3 mt0 pb3\">\n\t\t\t\t (Photo by Shoji Kudaka\/Stripes Okinawa)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Naha wrapped up the 52nd installment of the dragon boat races this year on a rainy note.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The races, which ran from May 3-5 at Naha Port New Wharf, featured teams battling it out on the water along a 600-meter course. &#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Okinawa\u2019s rain season officially started May 4 and on the last day of the races, 48 teams, including members of the U.S. military community, competed under cloud-covered skies and a constant barrage of rain.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Rowers gave it their all, defying the sudden chill from the low temps remaining under 20 degrees Celsius (68\u00b0 F) on the final day. The crowd went wild, rooting for their team while the rowers\u2019 passion and excitement took the venue by storm.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cIt was absolutely amazing,\u201d said Cala Booth of Yasha Dragons, a team of military spouses, veterans, and active duty servicemembers, which came on top in the heat No. 8.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cIt just totally blew our minds. We trained for the last couple of months, we came together as friends and families, really took it from there,\u201d Salazar said.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The Naha Dragon Boat Races are a highlight of the Golden Week holidays every year in Okinawa. The 3-day event is considered one of the three major festivals of Naha City along with the Naha Tug of War in October and the Shurijo Castle Festival in late October or early November.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Although the Naha Dragon Boat Races are done for the year, there are still more chances to catch boat races around Okinawa in the coming weeks. Yukkanuhi is May 4 of the lunar calendar, which falls on June 18 this year.
