In their epic bout at Tokyo Dome, Inoue retained his four super bantamweight title belts (WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO) by outpointing Nakatani on all three judges&#8217; scorecards.<\/p>\n<p>The Ring released its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringmagazine.com\/news\/the-ring-s-latest-ratings-major-changes-to-pound-for-pound-top-10-5VIyFb1xG1V3JcGJVmHVNK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">updated pound-for-pound rankings<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Nakatani (32-1, 24 KOs) slipped from sixth to seventh in the rankings.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2022, Inoue reached No 1 on The Ring&#8217;s chart for the first time. He also returned to the top in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Global sports media giant ESPN also released its pound-for-pound rankings in the aftermath of the Inoue-Nakatani match.<\/p>\n<p>Inoue delivered a convincing case that he deserves to be the pound-for-pound king, ESPN declared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/48684192\/men-boxing-pound-pound-rankings-new-no-1-naoya-inoue-david-benavidez-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">an online report<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fighting in front of more than 55,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome, Inoue delivered a performance that reinforced his standing as the best fighter in the world,&#8221; ESPN wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What looked on paper like a very close fight for the undisputed junior featherweight (aka super bantamweight) championship ultimately turned into a showcase for Inoue&#8217;s precision and control.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"677\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/boxing5.0510-677x1024.webp\" alt=\"Naoya Inoue\" class=\"wp-image-389732\"\/>Naoya Inoue (\u00a9KYODO)<\/p>\n<p>High Praise for Naoya Inoue<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the fight, Rudy Hernandez, Nakatani&#8217;s longtime trainer, said his strategy backfired.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he told The Ring that he should have instructed Nakatani to be more aggressive in the early rounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the fight, I know that Junto listens to me and will do what&#8217;s asked of him, and he doesn&#8217;t question it,&#8221; Hernandez told the magazine nicknamed &#8220;The Bible of Boxing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He then said, &#8220;The reason [our initial plan] went longer than it should have was that I knew Inoue has very good IQ, speed and power \u2014 he&#8217;s the entire package. My whole thing was to try and stay one step behind so that we can catch him once Inoue got close using his speed. (\u00a9KYODO)<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez summed up his thoughts on the fight with a tone of regret.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t about fighting,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;it was about trying to be in control and working on timing to catch Inoue. That was the plan. We didn&#8217;t want to lose any rounds. We made it a fight, but we started too late.
