TOKYO – Yokozuna Hoshoryu appeared to be hurt and limped from the ring following an upset loss to komusubi Takayasu as the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament opened Sunday with two of the sport’s brightest stars already missing through injury.<\/p>\n
Grand champion Onosato is out for around a month with a rotator cuff injury, his stable announced Friday, while Ukrainian-born ozeki Aonishiki faces demotion back to sekiwake after hurting his left ankle while preparing for the 15-day meet at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.<\/p>\n
Mongolian-born Hoshoryu was beaten at the jump by veteran former ozeki Takayasu and immediately showed signs of injury to his right upper leg after being twisted to the clay with an overarm throw.<\/p>\n
The two-time Emperor’s Cup winner was helped into a wheelchair before being taken from the arena.<\/p>\n
Ozeki Kotozakura was also handed an opening-day upset as No. 1 maegashira Fujinokawa got the better of him with a frontal thrust out.<\/p>\n
Returning ozeki Kirishima, back at the second-highest rank for the first time since May 2024, made a winning start by slapping down No. 1 maegashira Takanosho.<\/p>\n
Coming off his third top-division championship in March, the Mongolian-born ozeki delivered a powerful opening charge before slinging former sekiwake Takanosho to the sandy surface.<\/p>\n
New sekiwake Atamifuji was unable to mark his debut at the third-highest rank with a victory, losing by slap-down to No. 2 maegashira Ichiyamamoto.<\/p>\n
Kotoshoho, also debuting at sekiwake after a strong performance in March, succumbed to a beltless arm throw by rising star Yoshinofuji, competing at No. 2 maegashira.<\/p>\n
The 22-year-old Aonishiki was due to compete as a demotion-threatened “kadoban” ozeki after posting a 7-8 losing record at the March tournament, but his Ajigawa stable announced Sunday he has suffered ligament damage requiring around three weeks of treatment.<\/p>\n
