A Russian hiker was hurt in a bear attack<\/a> in Okutama, a mountainous town in western Tokyo<\/a>, becoming the latest victim of intensifying man-animal conflict in Japan.<\/p>\n

Authorities said the man, reported to be in his 30s but not named, sustained serious injuries to his arm and face. He remained conscious and was airlifted to a local hospital.<\/p>\n

According to local media, emergency services<\/a> received a call reporting the incident at around noon on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The man had been hiking alone when he came across the bear. He was not carrying a bear bell or other deterrent.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the attack, police and local hunters searched the area but could not find the bear, Kyodo News reported.<\/p>\n

Authorities later installed a cage in the town in a bid to capture the animal.<\/p>\n

The area has reported roughly 40 bear sightings since April, officials noted.<\/p>\n

Japan<\/a> confirmed its first fatal bear attack of 2026 earlier this month. The East Asian nation saw an unprecedented 13 casualties last year.<\/p>\n

Authorities said a 55-year-old woman found dead in the northern Iwate prefecture last month was killed by a bear. Two other bodies discovered in Iwate on 7 May and Yamagata prefecture on 5 May, respectively, were suspected to be linked to bear attacks as well.<\/p>\n

One of them was identified by NHK as 69-year-old Chiyoko Kumagai, who had disappeared after going into a mountain forest to collect edible wild plants.<\/p>\n

Japan saw a surge in dangerous bear encounters<\/a> in 2025, with the animals entering homes, schools, supermarkets, and hot spring resorts.<\/p>\n

Authorities are concerned that this year could turn out to be even worse in terms of animal attacks.<\/p>\n

Wildlife experts say the rise in attacks is linked to increasing bear populations, climate-related food changes, depopulation of rural areas, and abandonment of farmland. All of these factors are driving bears closer to human settlements.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s brown bear population has doubled over the past three decades to around 12,000, while Asian black bears on the main island of Honshu now number about 42,000, according to a 2025 government report.<\/p>\n
