We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>The manager of the Yomiuri Giants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/japan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a>\u2019s most storied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/baseball\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">baseball<\/a> team, resigned on Tuesday after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old daughter. <\/p>\n<p>Shinnosuke Abe, 47, was arrested on 25 May for allegedly grabbing his daughter and forcing her to the floor at their home in Tokyo\u2019s Shibuya Ward, local media reported. <\/p>\n<p>After he was released on Tuesday, Mr Abe addressed a press conference where he announced his resignation and apologised for \u201ctarnishing the proud tradition of Giants managers\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI caused tremendous concern and inconvenience to baseball fans, people involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/japan-tokyo-mlb-shohei-ohtani-new-york-yankees-b2762433.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">professional baseball<\/a> and the organisation because of family-related problems. I sincerely apologise,\u201d the coach added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abe\u2019s resignation came after the team\u2019s owner, Toshikazu Yamaguchi, said they had \u201cdetermined he cannot remain as manager.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe view the act of violence very seriously,\u201d Mr Yamaguchi said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>The Giants president Toru Kunimatsu also apologised and said they would consider disciplinary action against Mr Abe. <\/p>\n<p>Police said Mr Abe was \u201cfurious\u201d when he asked his daughters, aged 18 and 15, to be quiet but they did not listen and talked back to him. <\/p>\n<p>Nikkei Asia reported that Mr Abe was intoxicated at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old subsequently contacted a child guidance centre alleging that she had been assaulted by her father. Child guidance centres are local government bodies that respond to suspected cases of abuse. <\/p>\n<p>The centre made an emergency call to police at around 7pm local time. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Abe\u2019s daughter did not receive any injury from the alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/assault\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">assault<\/a>, according to Nippon. <\/p>\n<p>Police had not previously received any reports or complaints involving Mr Abe. <\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police Department said that it would continue to investigate. <\/p>\n<p>In a letter read by a representative at the press conference, the 18-year-old daughter denied being physically abused by her father and said it was an isolated incident, the Mainichi Shimbun reported. <\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t expect police to arrest her father, she said, adding that she cried when she saw him being taken into custody. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/05\/26\/07\/2205213937..\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"File. Manager Dave Roberts of Los Angeles Dodgers and Shinnosuke Abe of Yomiuri Giants shake hands after their game in Tokyo, Japan, on 15 March 2025 (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father and I have already reconciled, so please don\u2019t worry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abe said that his daughter was \u201cat a sensitive age\u201d, so he would appreciate it \u201cif everyone could care about her\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abe is a former professional baseball player and is widely regarded as one of Japan\u2019s greatest catchers. <\/p>\n<p>He recorded 2,132 hits and 406 home runs and helped the Giants win eight Central League pennants and three Japan Series titles. <\/p>\n<p>In 2012, he led the Central League in batting average and runs batted in.<\/p>\n<p>After retiring in 2019, Mr Abe managed the farm team of the Giants before serving as head coach and battery coach.
