Should China be wary?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If South Korea and Japan sign a military logistics support agreement, their <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/military\/article\/3355413\/why-us-navy-must-look-allies-if-it-wants-catch-china-sea?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ties with the US<\/a> would deepen as they act in concert to deter China and North Korea, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">However, they noted that several \u201churdles\u201d must be cleared before the deal could be sealed, including domestic opposition in South Korea to expanding security ties with Japan due to concerns it could sour relations with China, as well as unease stemming from Tokyo\u2019s wartime history.<\/p>\n<p>During the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/military\/article\/3355425\/china-dials-down-rhetoric-regional-risks-persist-shangri-la-dialogue?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shangri-La Dialogue<\/a> in Singapore on Sunday, South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-baek said he had discussed the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (Acsa) during a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cAs this is a matter that requires understanding and persuasion from the peoples of both countries, we still believe that we should remain cautious,\u201d Ahn said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Acsa would simplify the exchange of military supplies \u2013 such as ammunition, fuel and food \u2013 during emergencies or joint operations between signatory countries.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Ahn\u2019s comments were the first time that a senior South Korean defence official has acknowledged that the two sides were discussing the Acsa.
