The mainland Chinese coastguard\u2019s first independent law enforcement patrol east of Taiwan on Monday \u2013 in response to the maritime border talks<\/a> between Japan and the Philippines \u2013 marked an expansion of its patrolled area beyond the traditional focus.Since its launch in 2021, the China Coast Guard<\/a> (CCG) has routinely patrolled in the South China Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea.In recent years, apart from routine patrols around a few Taiwan-controlled islands, the CCG has also joined the People\u2019s Liberation Army<\/a> (PLA) in its massive drills encircling the self-ruled island.<\/p>\n

The patrol east of Taiwan showed \u201cnot only an expansion of [CCG\u2019s] sailing path, but also enhanced governing and jurisdictional capabilities\u201d, according to an article on Tuesday by Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV.<\/p>\n

Citing maritime expert Yang Xiao, the article said routine law enforcement in multiple regions around the island suggested that a complete sea-governance system surrounding it had been completed.<\/p>\n

Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary.
