But now the price increase has gone into effect, the gap between the Switch 2 and the PS5 has closed.

According to Famitsu data for the week ending 31st May, the Switch 2 sold 31k units compared to the PS5’s 8k units. It’s still a big difference between the duo, but it’s not the blowout we’d been seeing before.

Obviously the Japanese market is extremely unique, and there’s simply no overcoming the power of Pokémon or even titles like Tomodachi Life there. But there is a small window of opportunity here if Sony can keep the PS5’s price below Nintendo’s machine.

What will be particularly interesting is if the Switch 2 slips further; obviously it’s already raced to a pretty sizable install base in Japan anyway, but there is some pressure on Nintendo right now, because it’s still trying to grow the console’s footprint at a time when component prices are through the roof.

One thing I’d also quickly like to spotlight is 007 First Light, which sold pretty well on the PS5, and was beaten at retail by only Tomodachi Life. That’s a decent result for the IOI action game.

Software Sales

[NSW] Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream (Nintendo, 04/16/26) – 52,483 (1,259,031)
[PS5] 007 First Light (IO Interactive, 05/27/26) – 20,690 (New)
[SW2] Pokemon Pokopia (The Pokemon Company, 03/05/26) – 14,122 (1,038,407)
[SW2] Yoshi and the Mysterious Book (Nintendo, 05/21/26) – 12,701 (52,362)
[PS5] Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered (AQUAPLUS, 05/28/26) – 6,225 (New)
[SW2] Mario Kart World (Nintendo, 06/05/25) – 5,865 (2,958,073)
[NSW] Demon Kill Demon: Yomi 1984 (Experience, 05/28/26) – 3,719 (New)
[NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 3,480 (4,214,562)
[SW2] Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered (AQUAPLUS, 05/28/26) – 2,863 (New)
[SW2] Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV (Nintendo, 07/24/25) – 2,858 (202,741)

Hardware Sales

Switch 2 – 31,751 (5,865,213)
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 6,527 (1,302,820)
Switch OLED Model – 4,162 (9,585,830)
Switch Lite – 1,810 (6,972,953)
PlayStation 5 Pro – 1,479 (360,308)
Xbox Series X Digital Edition – 408 (31,544)
PlayStation 5 – 367 (5,919,834)
Xbox Series X – 304 (327,214)
Switch – 229 (20,300,305)
Xbox Series S – 123 (342,219)

[source famitsu.com, via gematsu.com]

See Also

As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between.
