After battering Okinawa with powerful winds, rough seas and flight cancellations, Jangmi barrelled northeast towards Japan\u2019s main islands, bringing bands of torrential rain across a broad stretch of the Pacific coast. Along the Koza River in Wakayama Prefecture, authorities issued a rare Level 5 flood emergency warning \u2013 Japan\u2019s highest possible alert level \u2013 after the river burst its banks around the Tsukinose district of Kozagawa. The warning, which is reserved for situations where lives are considered to be at immediate risk, was later downgraded as water levels began to scale back.<\/p>\n

Where in Japan has Typhoon Jangmi hit?<\/p>\n

Jangmi carved a path across a vast swathe of Japan, stretching from the islands of Okinawa<\/a> and Kyushu through Shikoku, Kansai and central Honshu before sweeping into the densely populated Kanto region surrounding Tokyo. In Owase, a fishing city in the Mie Prefecture, an extraordinary 535.5 millimetres of rain fell in just 24 hours \u2013 the highest June total ever recorded there. Floodwaters also surged through parts of nearby Ise, including Oharai-machi, the Edo-era shopping street that serves as the gateway to Japan\u2019s most sacred Shinto site, the Ise Grand Shrine.<\/p>\n

Some of the most severe conditions were reported around the coastal towns of Kozagawa and Kushimoto on the Kii Peninsula, close to where the storm first made landfall, with rivers swelling rapidly and roads inundated by torrents of muddy water. As Jangmi pushed northeast, bands of intense rainfall swept across Aichi, Shizuoka, Kanagawa and Tokyo, triggering rising river levels, transport disruption and dozens of reports of fallen trees. Off the Pacific coast, towering waves crashed against shorelines and sea walls, while dramatic footage from Izu Oshima showed huge swells battering the volcanic island\u2019s rugged coastline as the storm moved into the Pacific.<\/p>\n

Is Tokyo affected by Typhoon Jangmi?<\/p>\n

Although Tokyo<\/a> avoided the worst of the destructive winds seen further south, the capital still felt the effects of Typhoon Jangmi as bands of intense rain swept across the metropolitan area on Wednesday, 3 June. Rivers rose rapidly, while roads and underpasses experienced localised flooding and commuter transport across one of the world\u2019s busiest urban rail systems faced delays and disruptions. Authorities also issued evacuation advisories for some residents living near the Zenpukuji River in western Tokyo after water levels approached dangerous levels. However, the threat has now passed, and Jangmi is moving away from Japan.<\/p>\n

Are flights to Japan being cancelled?<\/p>\n

At the height of the storm, yes \u2013 but that’s now over. Japan Airlines<\/a> and All Nippon Airways cancelled nearly 900 domestic and international flights on Wednesday, 3 June, disrupting travel plans for around 90,000 passengers.
