But unlike China\u2019s global infrastructure initiative, which mainly takes the form of highways, railways and sea lanes, Japan\u2019s project is all about energy networks and supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>It poses a further challenge to America\u2019s waning economic and strategic influence in Asia, the world\u2019s most populous, resource-rich and potentially powerful region. What is more, it is a cooperative venture with the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/world-bank-group?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Bank<\/a>, which lends multilateral credibility.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Japan\u2019s project does not have a snappy title.
