{"id":37179,"date":"2026-06-08T15:25:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T15:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/37179\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T15:25:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T15:25:11","slug":"auburn-university-student-weston-higginbotham-found-dead-in-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/37179\/","title":{"rendered":"Auburn University student Weston Higginbotham found dead in Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The search for <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowhammernews.com\/police-missing-auburn-student-in-japan-likely-left-voluntarily-search-continues\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">missing<\/a> Auburn University student James \u201cWeston\u201d Higginbotham has ended in tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>Weston\u2019s parents announced Saturday that the 20-year-old Hoover native and Auburn student was found dead in a mountainous area outside Kyoto, Japan, after a weeklong search that drew support from volunteers, search teams and thousands of people across Alabama and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>According to the family, his body was discovered by a volunteer search-and-rescue team assisting in the effort to locate him.<\/p>\n<p>In a Facebook post Saturday morning, Weston\u2019s mother, Nancy Higginbotham, shared the heartbreaking news and reflected on the overwhelming support the family received throughout the search.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family is heartbroken to share that Weston was found deceased by a volunteer search-and-rescue group in a mountainous area outside of Kyoto,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe grief we feel is impossible to put into words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Higginbotham said the family is grateful for the time they had with their son and thanked the countless people who shared his story, offered prayers and encouragement, and helped in the search effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outpouring of kindness and support has carried us through the darkest days of our lives,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The search for Weston captured widespread attention across Alabama after he disappeared May 29 while visiting Japan with his family. As news of his disappearance spread, supporters across the state shared social media posts, organized prayer efforts and worked to bring attention to the search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A prayer<a href=\"https:\/\/yellowhammernews.com\/we-truly-feel-them-family-of-missing-auburn-student-thanks-supporters-for-prayers-and-assistance-as-search-continues-in-japan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> vigil<\/a> held in Hoover brought together family members, friends and community supporters who gathered to pray for Weston\u2019s safe return. The search effort drew attention well beyond Alabama, with supporters across the country and in Japan sharing information and offering assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Search efforts in Japan included law enforcement personnel, volunteer search-and-rescue teams and community members who assisted in efforts to locate the missing student. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/06\/us\/james-weston-higginbotham-found-dead?Date=20260607&amp;Profile=CNN,CNN+International&amp;utm_content=1780819077&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawSTrQJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETE0S1ltblV3MEVDeXVGMUlJc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHi3GdrESMpBAmDKegk06Eoc8-z5G5UeU6CRLEtHECAU8i2nILn9YrCZUiHhx_aem_rIzN0FfgyVEcyVNddreCYQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to CNN, a 72-hour police search of the mountainous area involved more than 100 officers, K-9 teams and helicopters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Hoover native was a graduate of Spain Park High School and a junior studying sustainability engineering at Auburn University. Family members described Weston as an avid traveler and outdoorsman who loved hiking, exploring nature and learning about different cultures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Hoover Mayor Nick Derzis said the loss has been felt throughout the city, where many residents had followed the search and joined in prayer efforts over the past week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cWeston was a young man of remarkable character,\u201d Derzis said. \u201cA Hoover native, a Spain Park High School graduate, and an Auburn University student, he had a deep love for the outdoors and the world around him. He touched everyone who knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Derzis said Hoover residents came together in prayer and hope for Weston\u2019s safe return and extended condolences on behalf of the city to the Higginbotham family and their friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Auburn University President Christopher Roberts also expressed condolences following news of Weston\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cOn behalf of Auburn University, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of James \u2018Weston\u2019 Higginbotham, who died while traveling in Japan,\u201d Roberts said in a statement provided to CNN. \u201cThe Auburn Family mourns this heartbreaking loss and holds Weston\u2019s family, friends and loved ones close in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Nancy Higginbotham said the family shared Weston\u2019s story publicly and worked with media outlets in hopes of finding him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As the family begins to mourn, Nancy Higginbotham said they are asking for privacy while remembering the son they described as \u201csweet\u201d and \u201cprecious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now ask for privacy as we begin to navigate this unimaginable loss,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support.
