Across nearly three hours, the night set out to trace more than 40 years of Japanese hip-hop, from its roots through to the artists carrying the culture today, and it did so by handing the floor over to the people who actually lived it.

The whole thing hung on the four classic elements of hip-hop; MC, break dance, graffiti, and DJ, with presenters introducing each segment and unpacking the history behind it rather than simply waving the next act on. Proceedings opened with the story of the 1983 visit to Japan by the cast of the film Wild Style, the moment the culture crossed over from New York and the reason the night’s producers cast Japan as hip-hop’s successor in the first place.

Those producers were the cross-generational trio of Kan Takagi, a true first-generation figure who co-founded the influential MAJOR FORCE label and, as one half of Tinnie Punx with Hiroshi Fujiwara, helped shape the scene in the 1980s; Zeebra, the King Giddra founder who pushed Japanese rap towards social commentary and into the mainstream, and YZERR of Kawasaki crew BAD HOP, representing the current wave. Hosting throughout was MC RYU, the veteran rapper and broadcaster best known internationally as the voice of Chop Chop Master Onion in PaRappa the Rapper.

This was a taster event by design, a stacked card representing just about every corner of the Japanese hip-hop scene on a constant churn from one era and medium to the next.

Producers Kan Takagi (right) and Zeebra (left) open the night at THE SUCCESSOR MAJ HIP HOP TRIBUTE, Zepp DiverCity (TOKYO), June 8th 2026.

The B-Boy showcase put dancers from across the generations on stage trading skills over a CRAZY-A set, and once the floor was good and warm, RHYMESTER crashed in for ‘B-BOYISM’. Nearly thirty years old now, the 1998 single, built off old-school breaks, pushes the message of holding to your own standard, pandering to no one and sharpening your craft, and the crowd gave it the biggest reaction of the night.

Seiko Ito and KEN THE 390, both witnesses to the dawn of the scene, introduced OZworld and MC TYSON, the former repping Okinawa and the latter Osaka. OZworld brought the spiritual, island-rooted sound of ‘369’, threading Okinawan dialect and cosmic numerology through his verses, while MC TYSON came hard in the other direction with the gritty, in-your-face Osaka street rap he has built his name on. Two distinct regional styles back to back, and a neat snapshot of how far the music has spread across the country.

RHYMESTER perform ‘B-BOYISM’ to close out the B-Boy showcase.

KING GIDDRA, the trio behind ‘Sora kara no Chikara’, one of the foundational records of Japanese rap back in 1995, were welcomed on by MC-HULK, GDX aka SHU, and Hasegawa of comedy duo and King of Conte 2014 winners Sissonne. Reunited and properly active again since their 2022 return, their medley of ‘Mikakunin Hikou Buttai Sekkinchuu’ and ‘UNSTOPPABLE’ had the swagger and bite of a group with no interest in retiring to the history books.

DJ CHARI & DJ TATSUKI, the first hip-hop DJs to headline their own show at Nippon Budokan, brought a flashy set that felt like a genuine luxury in a venue this size. AFRA and NOVEL VINTAGE followed with a beatbox showcase that doubled as a history of the genre, running a medley of classics from ‘B-BOYISM’ to ‘Bling-Bang-Bang-Born’ built entirely from the sounds of their own voices.

The graffiti segment turned to the artists behind the lobby gallery, with TOMI-E speaking to the history of Japanese graphic art. From there DJ KAORI and COMA-CHI, both veterans of the scene themselves, introduced its next generation of women, speaking frankly about how hard it once was to break into Japanese hip-hop and how much that has shifted.

3Li¥en commands the stage backed by her “team ¥” at THE SUCCESSOR MAJ HIP HOP TRIBUTE.

If anyone stole the youth vote that night, it was 3Li¥en. The Nigerian-Japanese rapper, who broke through on the viral ‘Team Tomodachi GALS Remix’, tore through ‘Move Bitch’, ‘SKiBiDi’, and ‘High Energy’. The last ran on the same trick as that Yuki Chiba megahit, a shout-along hook simple enough for the whole room to fire back at her, with 3Li¥en’s own “team ¥” giving the stage a party-meets-mosh-pit energy.

ROOTS OF EXILE TRIBE was the big question mark heading into the show. A polished LDH dance act in front of a devoted hip-hop crowd is not a guaranteed fit, but it didn’t take long for the room to get on board. With classic EXILE members ÜSA, MAKIDAI, and MATSU sharing the stage with EXILE TRIBE dancers, twelve-plus minutes of nonstop body popping, locking, and explosive krump pulled some of the showcase’s biggest moments. Introducing the segment, Zeebra had pitched the argument that dance, by way of the 1989 programme CLUB DADA and the group ZOO, was one of the real engines behind hip-hop’s spread in Japan, a case the performance made for him.

ROOTS OF EXILE TRIBE assemble as veterans ÜSA, MAKIDAI, and MATSU join performers from across nine LDH groups and crews, from THE RAMPAGE and FANTASTICS to krump pioneers RAG POUND.

DJ HAZIME and DJ WATARAI, both tracing their roots back to CLUB DADA, brought out two of today’s leading rappers in Watson and ¥ellow Bucks. Watson, the Tokushima kid turned one of the most closely watched rappers of the decade, showcased his top-class breath control on ‘Intro “Soul Quake”‘, the rapid-fire home-prefecture scene-setter that opens this year’s ‘Soul Quake 3’. ¥ellow Bucks countered with glossy, 808-heavy trap, including ‘Yessir’, the flute-hooked hit that’s become a reliable live anthem at festivals like POP YOURS.

As the night wound towards its close, NITRO MICROPHONE UNDERGROUND, the landmark eight-strong Tokyo crew built on the same assorted-MC model as Wu-Tang, raided the stage for the opener to their 2000 self-titled debut, filling the venue with an intense atmosphere as each member snatched the verse from the last.

Then STUTS, one of the scene’s most beloved figures who has laid beats down for countless artists over the years, wrapped the night alongside PUNPEE for their warm late 2016 cut ‘Yoru wo Tsukaihatashite’ (‘Exhaust the Night’). Known for playing his beats live rather than pressing go on a laptop, STUTS carried the track on his MPC, finger-drumming while PUNPEE delivered cool, composed bars over the top.

NITRO MICROPHONE UNDERGROUND raid the stage as the floor erupts for the closing leg of THE SUCCESSOR.

For the finale, MC RYU, Zeebra, Kan Takagi, and the crowd traded a call-and-response of “HIP!” and “HOP!” that ran the show out at close to three hours. Zeebra and Kan Takagi left the room on a message about young artists leading the next chapter while the older generations keep building their own mature hip-hop, a fitting note for an event built entirely around passing the baton.

A rotation-heavy bill, with most acts getting only one song each, never left much time to really get to grips with an artist before they dipped stage left. But sonic diversity was the aim of the game, and on that front they knocked it out of the park.

Did THE SUCCESSOR touch on everything Japanese hip-hop has to offer? No. Did it shout out every artist that got it to this point? Also no. But in the time it had, it did a solid job of providing a crash course in how the scene has grown over the decades, a launch pad to get stuck into and dig into the worms of it all.

The one real frustration was reach. No international broadcasting, just an ABEMA exclusive stream with no catch-up replay, so once it aired it was gone. Despite having the benefit of a bilingual MC, it felt like a missed opportunity to put Japanese hip-hop in front of exactly the wider global audience MAJ is otherwise designed to court. Still, the fact that hip-hop got its own dedicated event during MAJ week is worth celebrating in itself.

MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN Links:

Part music showcase and part history lesson, THE SUCCESSOR MAJ HIP HOP TRIBUTE rolled into Zepp DiverCity (TOKYO)…

[2
28446,8,17,14925,28447,28448,28449
post-38485","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-japan","tag-3lien","tag-japan","tag-japanese","tag-music-awards-japan","tag-music-awards-japan-2026","tag-rhymester","tag-the-successor
["GET
