Japan\u2019s internal affairs ministry has released an online visualization tool that makes it easier to analyze the fiscal conditions of local governments.<\/p>\n
What is known as the dashboard of regional fiscal data allows users to examine data held by the central government on revenues, expenditures and fiscal indicators of prefectural and municipal governments through graphs and color-coded maps. It also enables easy comparisons between entities.<\/p>\n
The ministry, which developed the dashboard in collaboration with the Digital Agency, is calling on local government employees and the public to use it. The tool is part of the agency\u2019s Japan Dashboard project for government statistical data analysis designed to facilitate data-based policy decisions and visualize policy impacts.<\/p>\n
A version containing data on municipalities was released in April, followed by that with data on prefectural governments the next month.<\/p>\n
The dashboard can display changes in local governments\u2019 real balance of revenues and expenditures and their financial strength index readings in a graph, for example. By selecting multiple local governments, users can generate color-coded maps for expenditures by category, such as civil engineering and education costs.<\/p>\n
They can also compare similar local governments across the country using data on the rate of population aging and the financial strength index.<\/p>\n
The tool utilizes data from the government\u2019s survey on local fiscal conditions for fiscal 2024, which includes statistics on local governments\u2019 settlement of accounts. The data will be updated every April.<\/p>\n
\u201cUsers can see at a glance which fields their local government and neighboring local governments are spending money on,\u201d a ministry official said. \u201cI hope it will encourage people to take an interest in local government finances.\u201d<\/p>\n
