{"id":3994,"date":"2026-04-12T09:05:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T09:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/3994\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T09:05:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T09:05:50","slug":"china-lies-about-okinawa-to-deflect-criticism-of-own-rights-abuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/3994\/","title":{"rendered":"China Lies About Okinawa to Deflect Criticism of Own Rights Abuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wpml-ls-statics-post_translations wpml-ls\">\u3053\u306e\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u3092 <\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/ja\/china-lies-about-okinawa-to-deflect-criticism-of-own-rights-abuses\/\" hreflang=\"ja\" lang=\"ja\" class=\"wpml-ls-link\" aria-label=\"Switch to \u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\" title=\"Switch to \u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e<\/a><br \/>\n \u3067\u8aad\u3080<\/p>\n<p>On November 9, China&#8217;s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, called for Japan to &#8220;stop prejudice and discrimination against Okinawans and other indigenous peoples.&#8221; The Japanese government quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2025\/11\/chinese-rhetoric-on-okinawa-and-the-ryukyu-islands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">condemned the remarks<\/a> made during a session of the Third Committee, the <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/united-nations-general-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">UN\u00a0General Assembly<\/a>&#8216;s principal <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">human rights<\/a> committee. Residents of <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/okinawa-prefecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Okinawa Prefecture<\/a> are not an &#8220;indigenous people.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the inflammatory statements made by the high-ranking Chinese diplomat are totally unacceptable. Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries were expressing serious concerns about the human rights situation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region<\/a> and elsewhere. In apparent rebuttal, the deputy ambassador made the controversial remarks about Okinawa.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy ambassador was obviously trying to deflect attention from <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/china-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">China&#8217;s abysmal human rights<\/a> record. He began criticizing Japan&#8217;s actions 80 years ago during the <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/pacific-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Pacific War<\/a>. Then he propagated the one-sided view that the Okinawans are an &#8220;indigenous people.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Japanese diplomat responded by saying, &#8220;Freedom, democracy, and fundamental human rights are the unshakable foundation for all of Japan&#8217;s decisions and actions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/N6AEGRCUMJMHBFNI36VLNGOW2Q-1024x664.jpeg\" alt=\"USED\" class=\"wp-image-347491\" style=\"width:500px\"  \/>Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and their daughter Princess Aiko speak with war survivors and representatives on June 4, Itoman City, Okinawa Prefecture.<\/p>\n<p>Ethnic Groups in Japan<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/ainu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Ainu<\/a> are the only ethnic group recognized as indigenous by the Japanese government and the National Diet. Incidentally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainu-assn.or.jp\/english\/summary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Act on the Promotion of Ainu Culture<\/a> aims to promote Ainu traditions and improve living standards for the Ainu people. However, it does not recognize indigenous rights over land and resources.<\/p>\n<p>In Okinawa, there are a very small number of groups that advocate &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/ryukyu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Ryukyu<\/a> independence.&#8221; A few individuals also claim &#8220;the rights of the indigenous people have been taken away.&#8221; Nevertheless, the vast majority of the prefecture&#8217;s residents neither want independence nor consider themselves &#8220;indigenous people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mamoru Sho is the 23rd head of the former <a href=\"https:\/\/english.ryukyushimpo.jp\/2019\/03\/28\/30134\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Ryukyu royal family<\/a>, the Second Sho Dynasty. He spoke on this issue at the May 30 ceremony commemorating the 53rd anniversary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cas.go.jp\/jp\/ryodo_eg\/taiou\/senkaku\/senkaku02-02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Okinawa&#8217;s reversion<\/a> to Japan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sho stated emphatically: &#8220;If you unravel the DNA of the Okinawa people, you will find that we are not some &#8216;indigenous people.&#8217; We are Japanese.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the General Assembly&#8217;s Third Committee debate, the Japanese side should have clearly stated that &#8220;the people of Okinawa are not an indigenous people.&#8221; Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/sanae-takaichi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Sanae Takaichi<\/a> and Foreign Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/toshimitsu-motegi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Toshimitsu Motegi<\/a> need to explicitly and resolutely reject China&#8217;s unjust claims.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Chinese-helicopter-Senkaku-May-2025-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-343974\" style=\"width:500px\"  \/>A Chinese government vessel launches a helicopter into Japanese airspace on May 3, 2025. By fanning the flames of division, Beijing is likely aiming to intensify opposition to the presence of the Self-Defense Forces and the United States military in Okinawa.<\/p>\n<p>There are also concerns that China&#8217;s hegemonic regime, led by Xi \u200b\u200bJinping, could attempt to seize Okinawa from Japan. It is putting neighboring <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Taiwan<\/a> under enormous pressure as it seeks to annex the island democracy. And Beijing is engaging in military intimidation around the <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/senkaku-islands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Senkaku Islands<\/a>, Ishigaki City, in Okinawa, asserting claims there.<\/p>\n<p>Okinawa Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/japan-forward.com\/tag\/denny-tamaki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Denny Tamaki<\/a> was asked about the Chinese deputy ambassador&#8217;s remarks during a press conference, but he failed to refute them.
