Japan has been testing a high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor for decades, though the technology has not yet been proven commercially.<\/p>\n<p>Under the agreement, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency will share its extensive safety data with Rolls-Royce to assist the company in building a demonstrator AMR in the UK by the mid-2030s. Rolls-Royce is understood to have held discussions with the British government about potential support that could eventually include taxpayer-backed loans, debt financing, or direct investments from the National Wealth Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Japan also has its own domestic programme, and the collaboration is expected to allow both countries to test the technology together. This comes as nuclear companies worldwide compete to be the first to commercialise AMR technology.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Cholerton, the group president of Rolls-Royce, described the deal between the UK and Japan as a milestone moment that opens the door to industrial growth, skilled jobs, and energy security for both nations. Masanori Koguchi, the president of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, expressed hope that the collaboration, drawing on Japanese expertise in high-temperature gas reactor technologies, would lead to early deployment and a significant step toward net zero.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear power plants are a key part of the British government&#8217;s plan to reach net zero carbon emissions, as they can provide stable electricity supplies at any time of day, unlike wind and solar farms. Rolls-Royce&#8217;s AMRs will operate at temperatures of 700 degrees or more and produce between 15 and 35 megawatts of electricity. This means they could supply heat and power for energy-intensive industrial processes such as steel-making, green hydrogen production, cement manufacturing, and the production of chemicals like plastics and fertilisers.<\/p>\n<p>Because the AMRs use a different reactor technology, they are considered meltdown-proof and will require less space than the separate small modular reactors that Rolls-Royce plans to build in Anglesey, Wales.
