{"id":40281,"date":"2026-06-14T14:13:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T14:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/40281\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T14:13:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T14:13:09","slug":"takaichi-hails-uk-defence-ties-despite-next-gen-jet-spending-uncertainty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/40281\/","title":{"rendered":"Takaichi hails UK defence ties despite next-gen jet spending uncertainty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hailed increasing defence cooperation with the UK during a meeting with her British counterpart Keir Starmer on Sunday, amid uncertainty about a new fighter jet programme.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe UK is a very important partner to Japan given the deepening of ties across a wide range of fields, including security and defence,\u201d Takaichi said as she met with Starmer in London. \u201cGiven the GCAP project, I think we have reached a level that we can call a near-alliance,\u201d she said, adding that she hoped to elevate ties to the next level with Starmer.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI\u2019m really pleased that today we can reconfirm our deep commitment in relation to GCAP,\u201d Starmer told Takaichi.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The comments on GCAP, or Global Combat Air Programme, an initiative between the UK, Japan, and Italy to develop a next-generation fighter jet by 2035, come as the project faces roadblocks including delays to Britain\u2019s financial contribution and uncertainty after UK Defence Secretary John Healey \u2013 a champion of the project \u2013 resigned on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Starmer and Takaichi were expected to discuss the launch of the next phase of the project through an international contract set to be signed this month, according to a statement by the British government ahead of the meeting. The statement did not say how much money would be invested.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The pledge to sign the international contract by the end of June would signal continued commitment, but the length of the contract wasn\u2019t immediately clear.
