Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is believed to be considering dissolving the Lower House for a snap election as early as next month, as the Japanese leader looks to stabilize the ruling bloc\u2019s fragile majority in the body.<\/p>\n

Takaichi appears to have \u201cshifted to a new stage\u201d in her thinking with regard to calling a snap poll, the co-leader of the Japan Innovation Party, the coalition partner of Takaichi\u2019s Liberal Democratic Party, said Sunday.<\/p>\n

JIP co-leader Hirofumi Yoshimura, who also serves as governor of Osaka Prefecture, said in an interview with NHK that he had spoken with Takaichi about the issue on Thursday, a day before the Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported<\/a> that Takaichi was considering the move.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we didn\u2019t discuss the specific timing for a dissolution (of parliament) at the outset of our conversation, we had an exchange where we both sensed that things had shifted to a new stage,\u201d Yoshimura said. \u201cWhat is being reported now isn\u2019t something that came out of the blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Takaichi is reportedly considering two options: either a Jan. 27 announcement and a \u200cFeb. 8 election or a Feb. 3 announcement and a Feb. 15 poll. The regular session of parliament is due to begin on Jan. 23.<\/p>\n

The Asahi Shimbun daily<\/a> also reported that Takaichi had told government officials that dissolving the Lower House at the start of the regular session is \u201cone option,\u201d but another proposal was to do so after passage of the fiscal 2026 budget.<\/p>\n

In an interview recorded Thursday and aired Sunday on NHK, Takaichi was asked about the possibility of a snap election, emphasizing that the budget remained a key focus of her administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want the public to feel the effects of the Takaichi Cabinet\u2019s economic policies and measures to combat high prices as soon as possible,\u201d she said. \u201cRight now, we are working diligently on the immediate tasks at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the internal affairs ministry\u2019s Election Administration Commission sent an urgent notice to prefectures on Saturday to prepare for the possibility of an early election, though it noted it did not have information beyond what had been reported.<\/p>\n

Under a snap election scenario, Takaichi would look to capitalize on her soaring approval ratings by having the LDP-JIP ruling coalition ride her coattails to victory \u2014 and potentially to a majority in the powerful Lower House.<\/p>\n

Takaichi, the country\u2019s first female prime minister, clocked a public approval rating for her Cabinet of around 70% in multiple surveys released late last month<\/a> \u2014 results that tracked a continued trend since she took office in October.<\/p>\n

However, calling an early election would be a gamble, observers say, since support for the LDP itself remains low.<\/p>\n
