Held to mark the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, the event is drawing attention as a venue for private-sector academic diplomacy that expands scholarly exchange and mutual understanding among future generations.

According to Dongseo University on Thursday, the “23rd Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum International Conference,” organized by the university’s Japan Research Center and hosted by the Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum, will be held Saturday at the Mita Campus of Keio University in Tokyo.

The forum’s theme is “Toward Building Sustainable Korea-Japan Cooperative Relations.” Master’s and doctoral researchers from universities in both countries will present research findings and hold discussions, divided into six fields: international relations and politics and law, economics and business administration, history, language and literature, society and gender, religion and thought, and culture and arts.

From the Korean side, 37 researchers from 16 universities, including Korea University, Seoul National University, and Yonsei University, will participate in the conference. From Japan, 49 researchers pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees at 36 universities, including the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, and Keio University, will serve as presenters and discussants.

At the opening ceremony, an opening address by Chang Je-kuk, president of Dongseo University and representative of the Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum, will be followed by a welcoming address from Tsuchiya Motohiro, executive director of Keio University. Ataka Kazuto, a professor at Keio University, will deliver a keynote lecture on the theme “Reflecting on the 60th Anniversary of Korea-Japan Diplomatic Normalization: Toward Building Sustainable Korea-Japan Cooperative Relations.”

This forum carries significance beyond a simple academic event, aiming to build a researcher network that will lead future Korea-Japan relations. After the conference, participants plan to continue their exchange by touring major cultural heritage sites in Tokyo, including museums and temples.

Launched in Busan in 2004, the Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum has been held annually, alternating between Korea and Japan. To date, more than 4,500 researchers have participated, establishing it as a leading exchange platform between the academic communities of the two countries. It is particularly regarded as a representative private-sector cooperation model that has built mutual trust through academic and cultural exchange, even amid recurring political and diplomatic conflicts.

“The more we enter the AI era, the more important the value of communication and mutual understanding between people, and deep reflection on history and culture, becomes,” Chang said. “Candid discussion and exchange among young researchers will serve as valuable groundwork not only for future Korea-Japan relations but also for the development of the humanities and social sciences.”

Panoramic view of Dongseo University.
