{"id":48880,"date":"2026-06-28T14:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T14:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/48880\/"},"modified":"2026-06-28T14:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T14:38:11","slug":"japanese-probe-set-for-super-close-flyby-on-july-5-were-going-to-discover-another-beast-to-put-in-the-zoo-of-asteroids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/japan\/48880\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese probe set for super-close flyby on July 5: &#8216;We&#8217;re going to discover another beast to put in the zoo of asteroids&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-202ab717-73df-4a86-9c41-6a06300b1c7e\">Japan&#8217;s Hayabusa2 sample-return spacecraft is on target to make one of the closest ever flybys of a near-Earth asteroid in early July, as part of its extended mission campaign.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40161-hayabusa2.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40161-hayabusa2.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40161-hayabusa2.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hayabusa2<\/a> launched in December 2014 and rendezvoused with the asteroid <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-ryugu\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-ryugu\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-ryugu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryugu<\/a> four years later. The spacecraft <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/ryugu-asteroid-sample-contains-all-five-key-components-of-dna-scientists-find\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/ryugu-asteroid-sample-contains-all-five-key-components-of-dna-scientists-find\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/ryugu-asteroid-sample-contains-all-five-key-components-of-dna-scientists-find\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collected samples<\/a> and delivered them to Earth in 2020, completing its primary objectives. But the hardy spacecraft still has bold plans to deliver new and exciting science data.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-202ab717-73df-4a86-9c41-6a06300b1c7e-2\">The spacecraft has been operating well, despite needing to briefly enter a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/glitch-forces-japans-asteroid-sampling-hayabusa2-probe-into-protective-safe-mode-in-deep-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/glitch-forces-japans-asteroid-sampling-hayabusa2-probe-into-protective-safe-mode-in-deep-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/glitch-forces-japans-asteroid-sampling-hayabusa2-probe-into-protective-safe-mode-in-deep-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protective safe mode<\/a> last year, and now is set to make a flyby of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a> Torifune on July 5, Satoshi Tanaka of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JAXA<\/a>) said in a presentation on Hayabusa2 during the 35th Meeting of the NASA Small Bodies Assessment Group (SBAG) on June 11.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4088b22f-22da-4bb7-a8d5-d91ec6b13f91\">The flyby will see Hayabusa2 get within 1 to 10 kilometers (0.62 to 6.2 miles) of Torifune, using its instrument suite to study the roughly 450-meter-wide (1,476 feet) asteroid as it whizzes past at 5.3 kilometers per second (3.3 miles per second).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is one of the closest asteroid encounters ever attempted by a mission of this class,&#8221; Tanaka said. &#8220;By combining advanced navigation techniques and the engineering capabilities of Hayabusa2, we have made it possible to achieve a flyby at a distance of only about 1 kilometer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Torifune was first given the designation 2001 CC21 before being named for a deity from Japanese mythology. Tanaka says the asteroid is somewhat similar to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41643-asteroid-itokawa-age-determined-hayabusa-mission.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41643-asteroid-itokawa-age-determined-hayabusa-mission.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41643-asteroid-itokawa-age-determined-hayabusa-mission.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Itokawa<\/a> \u2014 the target of Japan&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40156-hayabusa.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40156-hayabusa.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40156-hayabusa.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first Hayabusa mission<\/a> \u2014 but little is known for sure about Torifune, adding a level of uncertainty to this extended mission objective.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s still a risky operation, because they had not planned for this,&#8221; Patrick Michel, the principal investigator for the European Space Agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/like-accelerating-from-stationary-to-supersonic-flight-europes-hera-probe-boosts-speed-stays-on-course-for-november-asteroid-rendezvous\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/like-accelerating-from-stationary-to-supersonic-flight-europes-hera-probe-boosts-speed-stays-on-course-for-november-asteroid-rendezvous\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/like-accelerating-from-stationary-to-supersonic-flight-europes-hera-probe-boosts-speed-stays-on-course-for-november-asteroid-rendezvous\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hera asteroid mission<\/a> and part of the Hayabusa2 science team, told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\" data-url=\"http:\/\/space.com\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-normalise-host=\"http:\/\/space.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space.com<\/a>. &#8220;The second thing is that we have a high uncertainty on the size of the object,&#8221; he added, with the dimensions of the asteroid unknown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The asteroid could, for example, be a contact binary, according to Michel, in which two separate bodies came together at low velocities. Known contact binary small bodies include the Kuiper belt object <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/arrokoth-kuiper-belt-planetesimal-formation-new-horizons\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/arrokoth-kuiper-belt-planetesimal-formation-new-horizons\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/arrokoth-kuiper-belt-planetesimal-formation-new-horizons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arrokoth<\/a>, imaged by NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18377-new-horizons.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18377-new-horizons.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18377-new-horizons.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Horizons<\/a>, and comet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comet-67p-ingredients-for-life-smells\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comet-67p-ingredients-for-life-smells\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comet-67p-ingredients-for-life-smells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">67P\/Churyumov-Gerasimenko<\/a>, described as a &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30884-rosetta-rubber-duck-comet-mystery-solved.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30884-rosetta-rubber-duck-comet-mystery-solved.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30884-rosetta-rubber-duck-comet-mystery-solved.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rubber duck<\/a>&#8221; when visited by ESA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24292-rosetta-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24292-rosetta-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24292-rosetta-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rosetta<\/a> spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to discover what it looks like. And each time we have seen a new asteroid, we&#8217;ve been surprised,&#8221; Michel said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to discover another beast to put in the zoo of asteroids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-34e93d7e-63e2-4a09-81ed-0102f9b44fd8\">The very high velocity of the flyby means there will be limited time to collect images and other data on the asteroid, but the rapid encounter will also provide a useful test for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/planetary-defense-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/planetary-defense-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/planetary-defense-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planetary defense<\/a>, as well as adding to planetary science.<\/p>\n<p>The flyby, using advanced navigation techniques to guide and control the spacecraft, will be a useful test of a rapid reconnaissance concept that could be used to determine the physical properties of an asteroid. Such reconnaissance could provide vital information before intercepting a threatening asteroid with a kinetic impact, as demonstrated by NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DART mission<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Tanaka said that Hayabusa2 has been busy during its deep space cruise phase, including making observations of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/how-to-see-the-rare-zodiacal-light.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/how-to-see-the-rare-zodiacal-light.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/how-to-see-the-rare-zodiacal-light.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zodiacal light<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/how-to-see-the-rare-zodiacal-light.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/how-to-see-the-rare-zodiacal-light.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/how-to-see-the-rare-zodiacal-light.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a>, and the Torifune flyby will, hopefully, not be its final act. The ultimate goal of the Hayabusa2 extended mission is to visit the tiny asteroid 1998 KY26 in 2031, which would be the smallest asteroid ever visited.
