The story stretches back to 1850 when Christy, a Manchester cotton mill began weaving the bath towels for the world. The very first towel was crafted for the Queen of England. For years, these towels were manufactured in Greater Manchester.However, in 2010, Welspun, the visionary guardian of Christy, relocated production to Vapi, Gujarat. The factory in Vapi, specialises in creating yarn-dyed jacquard towels, where two different coloured yarns are woven together to form the fabric. This technique results in towels that are vibrant on both sides, showcasing India’s advanced textile craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

Ideation of a Wimbledon accessory<\/p>\n

The production of the towels is not just a simple process. It also involves a meticulous design process. The team starts planning 18 months before the tournament taking into account the latest design and colour trends for the season. Each towel takes 7 days to be made and is a work of synchronous designing and production.The colours of the towels aren’t random either. Men’s towels are always dark green, purple and gold, based on Wimbledon’s legendary club colours. Whereas, women’s towels change every year. In 2026, it is red and white. They are also eco-friendly (OEKO-TEX certified) made with high-tech HygroCotton, a patented spinning technology that is ideal for sports towels. It increases absorbency and wicks away water quickly. In their manufacturing plant in Anjar, the company has received complete independence from freshwater usage, through the implementation of a sewage treatment plant and other sustainability initiatives.<\/p>\n

The towels are not just an accessory, they are a collector’s item that people await every year. According to reports, Djokovic reportedly keeps a separate suitcase just for towels to take home.
