Summer McIntosh wiped out the last \u201csupersuit\u201d world record \u2060in women\u2019s swimming on Sunday with a stunning victory in the 200-meter butterfly at Canada\u2019s trials for the Pan Pacific Championships.<\/p>\n
Olympic and world champion McIntosh \u200btouched the wall in 2 minutes, 1.65 \u200cseconds \u200cin the final in Montreal, eclipsing \u200bLiu Zige\u2019s long-standing record (2:01.81) at China\u2019s National Games in October 2009.<\/p>\n
Liu\u2019s mark was set months before \u2060polyurethane suits were banned from global competition and was considered \u2060one of the hardest records to break.<\/p>\n
But McIntosh has been chipping away.<\/p>\n
The 19-year-old \u200bbecame the second woman \u2060to break 2:02.00 at last year\u2019s world championships and now owns five \u2060of the \u200bsix fastest times in the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs \u200byou can see my emotions, this means \u200bthe \u200cabsolute world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrowing up, this is the one world record I thought I would never break and to do it tonight \u200cis really special in front of a home crowd.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means the absolute world, and I\u2019m in shock right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
McIntosh now holds world records in four \u200bevents, \u200bhaving claimed the 200- and 400-meter \u200bindividual medley (IM), and 400-meter freestyle marks at last \u2060year\u2019s Canadian trials.<\/p>\n
She will have chances to raise the bar again, starting with the 400 IM on Monday.<\/p>\n
